We intend to rent an apartment this summer in one of the Spanish Costa’s for at least a month. Our aim is to view property with the intention of buying and moving there in 2007.
I have heard report of a lot of crime in some areas, can anyone advise on which area are best avoided.
Thanks

There has been a big problem with areas of the Costa Blanca around Torrevieja. Personally I think this is due to the massive increase in the population and the fact that the resources have not yet caught up. Another factor is that there is no welfare state ibn Spain, if you come in as an illegal without work propects, you wont get fed and housed by the government, hence these people turn to crime to survive.
You are doing the right thing by renting and taking your time. Be aware that agents here can charge thousands of euros commission, basically what they think they can get away with, so your best option is to strike a deal directly with the seller. There are thousands of properties for sale in this part of the Costa Blanca, it really is a buyers market. I live about 20kms south of Torrevieja and I love it here, at this stage, would never consider returning to the UK. Good luck in your search.

My Auntie and Uncle live in Torrevieja, I reckon it's a nice area (possibly growing) although I would say you have to be aware of certain Morrocans, but besides that Torrevieja ain't that bad in my opinion.

Costa Blanca North is a very pleasant area and completely different to the South. If you look on www.thinkspain.com you should see that there are quite a lot of properties for sale in this area.

Hi Hughie

Look over the Expats & Owners abroad forum for sound advice on Spain on the Holidaytruths site.

http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/index.php

Great resource for anything you might need to know with owners posting from Spain and UK.

I have lived in spain (Gran Alicant)Santa Pola area, for the past 3 years. Yes there is crime, but no more than the UK, In fact I fill safer here than the UK.
But the Police are very Racist, thay blame every Nationalaty, except the Spanish for a crime.
Cool

Crime follows the English around liek flies round honey. Go inland and you will find practically zero crime , even if it is just 10 miles or so. I can recommend a Holiday rental company called www.orbahols.com

Well I do not think Spain has more crime than England or any part of the world. Yes there are good and bad area one avoids. We have two apartments in Los-Alzares which is in Murcia. We only get bit noisy when in the summer English teens come, otherwise we find it is one of the most beatiful and peaceful place.

Hi Kusum, just caught your post re...Murcia. We can now get reasonably priced flights to Murcia from Edinburgh. We're thinking of visiting this summer, do you have any spare weeks to rent out, if so how much rent would you be asking for 2 people for 1 week?

pat. Smile

There is one thing anyone has to beware and that is the urbanisation concept. This is where they csan compulsory purchase your land to create a village, or "urbanisation" and there is nothing you can do about it. They do offer compensationan and will also relocate you as an option, but of little use if you decide that there is a place other than forever england

Have any of you sunseekers given any thought to Asturias/Galicia/Cantabria coasts. Absolutely beautiful and in most cases still cheaper than the south.
The best holiday we have had in the south was to a little known place called Almunecar. Torrevieja has just become a concrete jungle - an experience we are in no hurry to repeat.
Ever considered the Portugal coast west and north of Lisbon - stunning! Also Sicily - stunning! The locals in both of these places tend to be pleasant also.
