we are an active recently retired couple who are thiinking of purchasing a used sited mobile home on the gulf coast of Florida for use as a holiday home for up to 6months of the year. we see this as the cheaper alternative to the more higher priced genuine homes on offer, enabling us to retain our home base in this country.we wonder if anyone has opted for this alternative method and would gratefully accept advice hints & tips of any nature that would be of help

Although I spent a year working in southern Florida, I don't claim to be an expert, but you know that however much Americans chide us for still having a "class" structure, they have their own - a series of clearly-delineated ones, usaually defined by financial status.
If you are sensitive you might be upset by some who categorise those who live in "mobile homes" as "trailer trash".
You're aware, I'm sure, of the limits imposed as to how long you can stay in the United States?

You can only stay in the US for 3 months at a time. Then you have to come back to the UK for another 3 months before you can return and stay for 3 months. etc etc etc.

To enable you to stay longer, you`d need a green card. They are very strict on who gets green cards. You need to be quite high up on the food chain, ie a Manager or above, a profesional person, a Uni graduate, buying a business that employs over a certain amount of employees (7, IIRC). Oh and the Americans also like money, so if you`re a millionaire, they`ll give you a Green Card.

Stuart is right though. "Trailer Park Trash" are what normal Americans think of people who can only afford to live in Mobile Homes.

Have you thought about another State? Tennessee have quite decent sized properties for around £35000 - ot least that`s what they showed on "A Place in the Sun" a little while ago. You now what American properties are like, a "small" property by American standards are mansions by ours! Eek

John Smith: So what am I then? Nothing. I`m just a story.

Doctor: You`re an echo. That`s all. A TimeLord is so much more. A sum of knowledge; a code. A shared history. A shared suffering. Only it`s gone now, all of it. Gone forever.
