I'd recommend Vancouver. I was there about 18 months ago on holiday, gorgeous in the summer and plenty of snow for you in the winter. Gorgeous place too.

Thanks Michelle1984, I will check out Vancouver, I must admit I spend some of my Winters in Edmonton, Canada, and althought it's a really nice place, I don't think it's for me, but besides that I'm interested in finding other places that could be a potential home for me. Thanks again though, I will look it up Wink

Hmmm just been browing info about Vancouver, Canada, and to be honest Michelle1984, I dunno if it's for me lol, it looks like a nice place but according to this site:

www.tourismvancouver.com/visitors/travel_tips/what_to_wear

It says "Our winters are mild and wet - it rarely snows in this part of Canada except, of course, at our local ski hills."

Hmmm lol, Thanks though for taking your time and helping me out, I will keep looking for other places Wink

Oh well, worth a try Big Grin

I went in the summer, so I never actually saw any snow, just heard about it.

That's where I'd move to if I ever wanted to leave this country.

I spend the odd Winters in Canada, Edmonton anyway, so I like Canada alot, it's just a matter of finding the right place, obviously alot of research will have to be involved and what not.

Besides that, I'm fully aware of the huge amount of Chinese people that live in Vancouver, after researching and what not, I was looking at there Chine Town's it looks pretty cool, although I doubt I would have to learn Chinese in order to fit in lol

Your first port of call would be to see if you are eligible to emigrate. For Canada you need to pass a points system which depends on your job, qualifications etc. I don’t know how easy it is for office workers to qualify for the points as I don’t think Canada has a shortage of office workers. It’s skilled trades they want. However, if you do qualify for your points, I would personally stick to the West Vancouver or Vancouver Island (stunning). Be prepared to learn French if you opt to go East.

As for USA as far as I’m aware you’d find it hard to get a green card, but if you did, I would stay west again & check out Washington State in the Seattle region or go over the cascades into the eastern region of Washington State up near the Canadian border – you sure get snow there about 5-6’ in winter. It pretty quiet over there though.

If you are keen on winter sports and summer MTBing etc. then the US probably has opportunities that would let you combine this with business. When I was in Heavenly (Tahoe, California) I was on the lift with a young guy who qualified as a ski insructor (much easier in the US than Europe), did a few winter/summer seasons, and then took on a management role with the resort company. They also do programmes for sports management with exchanges for foreign youngsters as well. One of the things with the US seems to be that it's a lot easier to get residency if you're already gainfully employed out there, and this would be a way of testing things out and getting your foot in the door.

Cheers for the advice and what not, regarding the main issue, getting a Green Card, Visas etc. well I've gone through the Requirements for both countries and theres a few different ways of obtainins these Visas and what not, theres diff. catagories ofwhich you can get them, which I could look into this more and get more advice nearer the time of when I would ideally like to start my new life.

It's just a matter of finding the right place at the moment from that I can look into the whole Visa issue, which I know would take time.

That's mainly for Quebec though ain't it? as I know French is there first Language in that part of Canada, where as the other places there first language is mainly English, although i do speak a lil' French lol.

Besides that once again, cheers for the advice, much appreciated Smile

Regarding permanent residence with the CHC...where there's a will there's a way.

I am a permanent resident. Life was a roller coaster getting it and I am just a humble office clerk. However, there are always ways around things.

I lived in Barrie, in a snow belt.....you want snow go there. And, although it's east, nobody spoke french. Quebec is where that happens!

I lived there for nearly 4 years...back in UK now. Came home last March!

I lived in Midhurst just outside Barrie. Barrie is a huge city and growing very very quickly.

Property is good and cheap compared to UK! Taxes are high and jobs are hard to find.

You have to remember - Canada is a vast Country with only a population of around 26 million...compared to this tiny Island and the 60 odd million we have here. Therefore taxes are bound to be hirer!

Temperatures can be found on www.weathernetwork.ca There are web cams on there so you can view what it is like now.

Properties can be found on www.mls.ca!

Hope that helps...ask me all you like!

I live in California and have met a lot of expat Brits who've moved down here from BC, from what I've been told it's hard to find work there.

Unless you have realatives in the US or have some higher qualifications you will have a hard time getting a greencard.
California by the way has just about every climate you could wish from desert to mountains. There's no lack of snow in the Sierra's

Angelo G,

Have some very good friends that live in San Francisco. Have probably been bout 8 times in the last 10 years or so and skied a number of the resorts around Lake Tahoe. You can't beat the final "Sierra Run" at the end of the day down to the bar for an ice cool Sierra Nevada! Have a lot of very fond memories!!!

Glad to see something positive about the USA come out of the UK.
Most people who come out here with an open mind seem to like it. Anyhow plenty of new snow right now and conditions are pretty good.
I live about an hour north of S.F. in the Nape Valley wine country.
