I am considering purchasing a new build property on the Island of Zakynthos in Greece. Has anyone got any experience they can share re buying in Greece/Zante and the various pitfalls etc I should watch out for.
In addition can anyone recommend a lender with a view to raising finance secured on the property?
while you wait for help here heres a few pages and links for you. i was looking a couple of years back but prices shot up and i gave up on the idea.
different island but a good resource for greece CORFIOT.COM some very good info and advice on this site from people who have.
Another fair site with a forum you could tryout for info Alykes.com Look over the messageboard for help. also the site has a guestbook which islanders frequent to answer questions and help.
Many of the banks are falling over themselves to lend money on property here; get yourself a good lawyer/fixer and there should be little problem if you can produce tax returns and so on.
Bear in mind there are two prices, the official and the real and you'll need to hand over the difference in cash, in an envelope without a receipt which can be quite nerve racking if not done before!!
pay particular attention to the building permission/licence. We have a property in crete and have encountered problems because there are different types of building permissions.get a good lawyer with knowledge of greek law! lots of rules appear when purchasing property in Greece!

Be very aware when buying in Greece. Select your own Lawyer, pay the downpayments AFTER each stage of work, if possible live nearby where your build will be or employ someone to oversee the work for you. www.interkriti.gr is full of info. Ensure IKA (local taxes) are paid by your builder, if they aren't you cannot get mains electric or water unless you pay again. This is a big problem in Crete.
Good Luck and check and double check before you sign anything
