Can't believe that there is no one who doesn't know something good or bad about this subjectIt is not timeshare, just 4-6 sets of people who want to share the cost of buying and running a property abroad.

patpot, sometimes its worth posting on other forums that have international members. I use the Channel4 cricket forum and it has members all over the world, but mainly cricket playing countries. My point is that although this forum is specifically for buying abroad, it gets very little patronisation compared to some of the others. Four or five people post on here each week whilst on the cricket forum there is usually about 70 to a 100 logged in at any one time (24 hours per day) and I'm sure this will be the case with some of the other forums. I'm sure you'll find someone with the knowledge you seek, or at least one who will point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the advice Wackydodger but if you hadn't told me I certainly wouldn't have thought about going to a 'cricket forum', I do have some property that I am considering sharing and I would have thought anybody looking would look here first.

Me too Rich. But unfortunately, most of these C4 forums are woefully under subscribed. The exception is the cricket forum which is usually buzzing 24/7. Non cricket related subjects are often discussed and although most subscribers are from cricket playing nations there are certainly members from Canada, USA, Sth Africa, Zimbawi, Sub Continent etc who often have first hand experiences of places all over the world. I've picked up lots of useful info on that forum re geography and local conditions etc. Give it try, it only a couple of mouse clicks and you might be suprised at the response you get.

Just a brief post script. I have a serious problem when abroad with mosquito bites. I happened to mention it on the cricket forum and had a multitude of suggestions for good remedies.

Thank you 'Wackydodger' I'll just bowl myself through the 3 wicket door then and just keep popping back here in case anyone is interested in making a few bob abroad.

Hi

This is rare, but I know of examples in this area.

There is no legal problem in co-owning property (or boats) in France.

I guess the problem is finding a group of people who can agree on area and property ?

Never in a million years would I buy a place with a bunch of other people. It's asking for trouble IMHO.

What if the property was semi-detached with enough land for a swimming pool and tennis court, easy access to best canoeing, had wonderful summers and lots of snow in winter-time. Cheap flights from UK and even cheaper back into UK. No language problems. AND THE PROPERTY IS LESS THAN £35,000 and has 5 bedrooms for ALL of your friends!

sjjs, it's not quite as basic as buying with a bunch of people. There are companies who specialise in co-ownership. They obviously have to gather info from interested parties as to where, when, price and a host of other deciding factors that prospective buyers make a decision on. I personally will probably never want to live abroad permanently. I am still working, so a 4th or 6th share in a substantial property is what I am interested in. This would be purchased outright, and each persons share is divided on a rolling rota so that all owners can experience all seasons. Alternatively,an owner can either swap with others or simply rent their share. If I have for example 2 months I can use all of it or I can use 1 month and let the other to anyone I wish. The good thing is that all costs maintenance, replacing furnishings, are shared as well as the overall responsibility for good standards. Someone mentioned that I could just rent, yes I could, to me that is money down the drain. I am a property owner and let to professionals, renting is not something I would consider.

I think the idea in principle is a good one, however I think that the idea will scare many people. Many you should consider buying an apartment block that requires renovation. Generally speaking you should be able to aquire this cheaper as there are less customers available with enough money to buy a whole block so more chance of getting a bargain and you will all save on legal cost as only one set. After you have worked together to get it renovated each of you can then have your own apartment to do as each of you want.

I think if you were to consider such a proposal much people would be interested.
Anyway hope that this might help in some way and good luck.

Chris,
I've read your posts here and on other subjects.
If co-opting is an option for you I would be interested in talking with you as I am interested in purchasing in Germany if I can find the right place and the right price. Can I supply my e-mail or is not the done thing on these forums?
