Hello, I'm planning to move to Austria soonish. Like most folks, I have a stack of electrical goods in my home - from hairdryer, tv, hi-fi, pc to hover, fridge, tropical fish tank etc etc. Can someone in the know tell me if it is possible (safe) to change the plugs on the appliances or do I need lots of adaptors ?? .... Or do I need a whole new household of electrical stuff ?!?!?!

I think you can change the plugs. Austria has the same voltage as in the UK (220). I would check for your oven & fridge, washing machine... because there may be fuses in the plug.In fact all big appliances are those I would worry about.

No problem in general.
Buy several UK 4-gang adaptors before you go, then change the plug on these to an Austrian one when you get there. That gets you up and running much faster than changing all the plugs at the start.
I'm not sure if the TV will work. Our new-ish english portable TV works in France fine (contrary to what we were told!) but the slightly older widescreen won't work.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with plumbed in things like the washing machine but only because it's going to be more hassle disconnecting them than it's worth.
If you have Sky, don't tell them you're moving to Austria or they'll cut you off. The box will work fine, but you will need a new, larger, dish. You need over 80cm in the south of France so possibly around 1m in Austria to pick up the UK programmes.
Wew have a house full of electrical good fron the U.K. Used a couple of travel plugs to start us off and then picked up 30 replacement plugs from a DIY shop for about 70 cents (50 pence) each. Then a fun day of snipping the old ones off and wiring to new ones on.Your TV may not work but you can still use it with a video/dvd/playstation. Our old U.K. is now just used to watch DVD's in bed
Good short term solution: get a one to four adapter and then just change the one end to an Austrian plug; you can still use 4 English plugs at the other end till the time comes to change.
