Hi

This is my first post so please be gentle :-)

I am considering buying a plot of land with a view to putting a new build on it or renovating an existing building. I have been told that the north of Portugal is beautiful and not too expensive. Does anyone have any experience or any links I can visit so I can make a more informed decision.

Cheers
Sean

Before settling on any particular project, do your homework and compare features before deciding.

I am about to begin a self build in Spain and these are my priorities:
Travel from UK via 'low cost' carrier
Sea view
Mains Water and Electricity in vicinity
Short distance to 'maintained highway'

Obviously planning permission is a must. New build will give you 'fixed' costs, renovation can have 'hidden' costs unless your survey is detailed.

Get out there, have a good look around. If you avoid the 'brit hot-spots' there are amazingly good value areas.

I think that the area you are looking for is the Douro valley, east of Porto. The landscape there is breathtaking.
Ryanair flys twice daily to Porto (in the morning and in the evening) from Stansted.
The secondary roads are not very good but the area is crossed by the A4 motorway and hopefully you would be able to buy a property not very far away from it.
Prices are bound to be cheaper than in Lisbon or the Algarve but the downside is that most of the locals won´t speak english (except perharps the young people). People in this area tend to be friendly and crime is very low.

If you´re going to buy a plot of land you should make sure that you are able to build there.
Local authorities there all have have a document called PDM (roughly "municipal planning document") which lists the places where you can and not build.

Hi,

Weather up north is colder and wetter. Summers hot.Winters cold.
You can try a few sites with local ads and estate agents.
www.era.pt , www. remax.pt , www. sapo.pt and click imoveis, below classificados ( top right ).In all these you can choose english.
But you really need to go and have look for yourself.

Adeus and good luck

I have just spent a number of months travelling around Portugal looking for property and discovered the Minho region/Costa Verde in the north of Portugal - very beautiful, about 40 minutes from Porto airport with lovely beaches, mountains etc and the properties and land prices are incredibly cheap. www.portugalvirtual.pt/_tourism/costaverde gives an idea what area is like. The estate agent I found was incredibly helpful, spoke excellent English and I ended up completing the purchase of my house within 4 weeks!

Try wwwPortuhome.com Based in Ponte de Lima, a portuguese company with deep roots in the community, Dom Ze d´Almada speaks good english, and has many clients as continuing friends.

I´ve lived here for 14 yrs and can greatly recommend it
