Found this interesting statement on the Devonshire Red Website.

Statement: 'Hugh's Chicken Run' on Channel 4

FOR THE RECORD – In the first ‘Hugh’s Chicken Run’ programme last night Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall claimed that when he asked poultry farmers for access to an intensive farm “they wouldn’t let me any closer than the end of a phone.” This is untrue.

Have a look and read the full article on www.devonshirered.co.uk

THere are a few loop holes there:

1) First to poineer freerange for retail (I believe there were possible beaten to it by a few thousand years.

2)in 2000, was awarded the first licence to produce organic chicken under the Soil Association symbol. (under but not by)

3) In the first ‘Hugh’s Chicken Run’ programme last night Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall claimed that when he asked poultry farmers for access to an intensive farm “they wouldn’t let me any closer than the end of a phone.” This is untrue. (Intensice but not freerange. The guy who worked wit him did say that he had been told that if he did not show the proceedure in a favourable light he would never work in the industry again. This constutes a cartel which is ilegal).

As a first poster I'd hazard a guess you worked for this complany.

Oh and the Guardian newpaper don't seem to think they're a nice company either!

I didn't get that impression. I thought it was a good article. Also, with the refusal thing, it may well have been that Lloyd Maunder only gave their permission once Hugh had already got his shed up and running. Can anyone from River Cottage confirm this?
