ste does my head in because on one hand, i think he's vile and i cant stand to even look at him, and on the other i feel sorry for him at times because of his family.

People use a bad childhood far too often as an excuse. Yes, his family was terrible, and that is sad, but every time he hits his girlfriend he makes the choice to do it.
A person can escape the cycle of violence set about by their family if they're willing to.

^ Exactly, I know people who have had a terrible childhood and they're the most nicest people you could ever meet. Some people just act on it and use it as a cover up for being so cruel towards others. I must admit I do feel sorry for ste, but then at the same time I can't stand him. The actor who plays him is brilliant though

what makes me laugh is when people say they've had a bad childhood so that is the reason, surely you know how it felt to be on the receiving end of these things so why would you want to inflict that on other people, yes we follow by example and if parents don't set a good example then it doesn't help but it cannot and should not be used as an excuse to behave how you like
