All of this is based on my opinion from what I studied for my A level Psych, which I did quite a bit on.
It'll more likely be schizophrenia rather that multiple personality. The two do seem very similar but are very different. With MPD, the split is in the personality of the actual person and Newt's personality hasn't changed. Also with MPD, there are periods and blankness almost like amnesia where the other personality has took over. This doesn't seem to have happened to Newt.
The symptoms with Schizophrenia are delusions and hallutinations and the "split" concerned with Schizophrenia is between thought and feeling. This is what Eli seems to do - Portray Newts thoughts and feelings, the ones which he keeps hidden and doesn't want to say.
I am very welcome to criticism, there's probably something else that I've neglected to say..

i agree, this is pretty much what i said on a different post, i didn't say schizophrenia but agree with your criticisms of the MPD idea...this is also from my a level psychology course. WAHEY
Yeah i thought it was schizophrenia more than Multiple Personality Disorder even though i have never studied psychology lol. Once i was in Bristol visiting my sister and she lived quite near a mental hospital. we were on a bus together heading into town and the woman opposite us was screaming. then she suddenly stopped and said to us " don't worry, she'll stop in a minute!" she obviously switched personalities, quite scary!!

Interesting, im not really sure what you're trying to say about schizophrenias 'split' thing, as far as I know it's not a term that's usually used for that particular illness (cause of the fact alot fo people still think schizophrenics have split personalites ) My knowledge of it is based on personal experience, living with a sibling who has severe schizophrenia, in all honesty in my experience it's not at all like Newt, however he seems to be in the early stages of something so it could be consistant with the illness I suppose, it effects people differently as far as I know so I guess that could be what's going on with him. It's hard to jugde at this early stage.

do people think Eli isn't real and is imagined (probably the wrong word) by Newt? sorry i haven't been on here 4 ages so have probs missed something. i agree with what u have said coz Newt hasn't changed his personality at all, and it shares comparisons with 'A Beautiful Mind', in which the main character suffers schizofrenia and u see from his point of view, i.e. the hallucinations etc, so i agree with u there starflake
