I don't mean this in the traditional sense but in a character sort of way.
Why is it that intelligent people are made out to be losers? Tina McQueen is the "bookish one", yeah we get it. But why do they have to dress her in such awful clothes. I don't remember it being a rule that people who like to read have to wear glasses and wool cardigans. I don't know of a girl her age that would dress that way, intelligent or not. I know they're trying to give each McQueen their own identity but Tina is right out of the old Saved By The Bell book (those of you old enough will know exactly what i mean, and it was a great show - more than ten years ago!). Elliot is also a stereotype that is so extreme it's untrue. It's things like this that keep Hollyoaks from being taken seriously as a continuing drama (Soap to you and me but not to tv awards, LOL).
Um, I don't agree but Saved By The Bell is still shown on Nickolodeon(I think that's how you spell it) as my sister watches it, so the younger folks will most probably know what you're talking about.
All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them - Walt Disney
Hob Nobs are like Marines - Peter Kay
Just when you think you know the answers, I change the questions - Rowdy Roddy Piper
I agree, it makes me laugh. Hollyoaks are declaring "Look at us creating John Paul McQueen, a counter-type of gay people worldwide!" when they have numerous stereotypes of other cultures parading round Hollyoaks.
i get what your saying, but at the same time theyre trying to show diverse characters, and isnt nancy supposed to be intelligent, yet she doesnt dress geekily or whatever, and there are people like elliot and tina etc in real life, though few and far between
Nancy is always making a political statement, a huge reason why I love her but it shouldnt be automatically assumed that she is intelligent, well, no more than the average person anyway.
Nancy comes from a middle/upper class background and so is more likely to be more culturally adapted then the likes of the McQueens anyway...

I think anyone who is able to read Simone de Beauvoir is likely to be intelligent!
Haha! I guess I missed that scene...please may I be mistaken? Dont get me wrong, Im not having a dig at Nancy, shes my favourite character (alongside Steph) but I wasnt saw if she was meant to be percieved as intelligent or just a very outspoken spokesperson.
To a certain extent though, Nancy is very isolated from the other teenagers her age. They claim to be her friend but they all push her out of their lives for romance dont they? Like at the Prom, they felt obliged to invite her along but all moan at her when she feels passionately about something. Nancys "friends" treat her appaulingly. She really deserves better...
I think Nancy is supposed to be someone who is intelligent and who questions the status quo. This manifested itself in early rebellion alongside a need to distance herself from the herd mentality of her peer group. Now her recent experiences and new responsibilities have lead to an early maturity and a desire to oppose injustice. She was very protective of Hannah recently and seems ready "to stand up and be counted". Hooray for the Nancys of this world, what would we do without them!
