I think Ben was probably singing live, because he's lead singer in a band (chairman of the board), and he's leaving to spend more time with his band. They're doing a delta goodrem from neighbours, and using his exit as a way of promoting his band.

That was Ben's voice and also him playing the guitar for real as the actress who plays Steph said this in her interview

O yeah, I think cameron is one of the best characters and it's great they're not killing him off, as it was rumoured. I doubt he'll come back though if his band does make it big, which I hope it will.
