The best game I ever played was Operation Flashpoint, set in an alternative Cold War you had the ability to travel anywhere on one of 3 Islands using whatever transport or weapons you find, although there were set objectives the game play was totally non-linear. There was one mission where my squad was killed off and I was taken away in a Russian helicopter gunship to an enemy base to be a prisoner, the idea was that I was supposed to escape at some point so when I was taken out of the helicopter; instead of running off into the base to find a gun or weapon of some kind I simply ran back to the helicopter, got in, took off and proceeded to blow the hell out of the enemy base before flying off to safety. It was more than just a first or third person shooter; it was more like a military simulation... absolutely brilliant!!
Does anyone know when Operation Flashpoint 2 is coming out?
