Disc read error, I remember having that all the time on my ps2. I just bought one of those laser lens cleaners, the ones that have the brushes on the back of the disc. Its just the lens sometimes has too much dust and whatever to read the disc.

If the disc cleaner does not work the next step is to take it apart and clean the lens with some compressed air. Check the net for full instructions before taking your PS2 apart!
The PS2 is prone to this - as has been mentioned, cleaning the lens can sometimes sort it out although it is a fiddly process. More often than not it's a case of the laser carriage being misaligned - on the old PS2 there is a way you can re-align the carriage but it was a nightmare to do - it was pretty much a case of moving it a notch, testing it and so on. I'm not sure you can do it with the slimline but if you need to get a new laser (they are about £20), there are 2 types for the 2 models that have come out - just make sure you get the right one - and make sure you have a soldering iron!
Hi, I also had the disc read error and until recently my console was a decoration item in my room but now I found a great new solution with step by step information and photos of how to fix it... Here is the page for Disc read error solution
If its not your disks then its the lens same thing happened to me but sadly my ps2 dint give in with out a fight it scratched my disks before it broke down

Ah the old disc read error, like most people here I would recomened using a lens cleaner, or cleaning your discs. I have been through about 3 ps2s in my time, my game cube on the other hand has never gone wrong.
