Working at a Brat Camp
Has anyone ever thought about getting involved in a "Brat Camp" ? personally I woudn't mind getting involved i.e. Job at a Brat Camp in America, I reckon I could commuicate with the kids at their level and it would be a good experience, by the way I'm 20 lol

Basically I reckon it would be interesting to get involved in, obviously never gonna happen lol but anyway...

Hi EnglishST, yeah it would be challanging but would defo give it a go!
I work at a secondary school myself so I already deal with teenagers with behavior and learning difficulties, but would be good to do it in a different setting to a school.
By the way, I'm also almost 20!

Yer it would be pretty good, I actually looked on a number of "Brat Camp" style places and the majority of them required you to be or to have American Citezenship lol, beides that I like the whole idea of the "Survival" experience and in the Woods, in the Snow etc. sounds cool

Yeah that would also be very cool!
As I said I work with similar kind of teenagers, obviously some aren't as rude, aggresive, etc as those girls on Brat Camp, but it would stillbe good to be able to do that sort of thing out of a "professional" school setting.

There are lots of schemes that enable you to do similar things - VSO, Raleigh International etc.

oh yes sounds like fun

I didn't say it would be fun, I said it would be a good experience etc. with relating to what you learn from it and what not, if it ain't your cuppa tea then obviously you wouldn't like it lol, but for me I reckon I would have a good time with learning, understanding and what not.

And I would like to try and make an improvement on their troubled lives.

I took part in a Raleigh International expedition a fair few years a go now. We did all that stuff - trekking, sleeping out under the stars, eating 'round a campfire, learning to canoe etc. It was just combined with charity and conservation work and seeing some beautiful parts of the world, rather than putting up with spoilt brats coming down from a cocktail of drugs.

We also did some self-development, but the experience alone gives you amazing confidence, independence and outlook on life.

Bring back National Service. That'd satisfy the need to be at one with nature whilst learning some life skills.

Can hardly understand your posts JD, unfortunately.

With regards to Raleigh, we were away for 12 weeks, although expeditions may be different now. I also travelled afterwards with new mates I'd made and did a lot of stuff with Raleigh when I returned to England.

Yer, I found it quite difficult to read your Posts "jd,aka, mandy" I gave up so sorry for not reading them all, and you could have Posted all that in the same Post rather then individual posts which leads to "bumping" up your Post count, ofwhich i think you wan't to do...

Cornwell you wouldn't happend to have Links/Info and what not for the Raleigh International Expedition, I'm very much interested, I just wanna do summit with my life you know? something that would be a HUGE experience from me, coz I'm getting bored to be honest.

Anyway gotta go, peace Wink

i would love to be able to make a difference in kids lives.
it seems such a shame they can't see what they can do with their lives.. i enjoy learning so much...why would people not want to learn! education is so important! ...but not just education...everything they do...it's just so inspiring

In the late 1990's I worked on a young offenders program where we would go out in the Australian outback for several weeks and teach them bushcraft. These kids were there for various reasons, thieft, drugs, assault etc and generally 90% reacted in a positive way to the program, which made you feel you have saved a life. I still keep in contact with a few of the people and the majority have in some way turned a corner and started giving back to the community in a positive way. I am going back home to Australia in October after 7 yrs here in the Uk and hopefully get back into a program like that again.

I agree Marf, I'm not saying I was totally out of control as a teenager but I did have my moments and obviously now I'm alot more imporved and what not Smile and personally I reckon my knowledge would give the kids a 2nd chance, well not so much my knowledge but I'm sure I could make an improvement on their lives as you said Marf "it seems such a shame they can't see what they can do with their lives.. i enjoy learning so much...why would people not want to learn! education is so important! ...but not just education...everything they do...it's just so inspiring"
