Gosh....wasn't it funny the way the TV crew shopped the girls (come on...they SOOOO did!!) to the Brat Camp rangers for handling a fag butt?
No! I think pathetic and totally unnecessary were nearer the mark I think!
As was the decision to bust them, even if it was only for a day, back to mouse for just picking up and holding a cigarette butt.....ridiculous!
Over the top, unnecessary and could have been totally counter-productive.
I can't think how this over-authoritarian stance was supposed to be benefitting the girls. We're dealing with ordinary teenage girls here, not automatons.
It would be worth their while to remember that in future.
Actually, we are not dealing with 'ordinary teenage girls here', we are dealing with teenagers who have gone much further than 'ordinary' teenage behaviour. The point of the camp laying down strict rules is very clear. They know full well that these kids will go back to the real world. By making sure thay understand that there are rules in life, they equip the girls to say NO to future temptations. One of the most obvious things in all the Brat Camp series is that they have gone well beyond 'ordinary'.
I am glad you agree, but these places have to have a way of showing that bad behaviour means consequences. The only consequence available was to demote them to 'mouse'. And it seemed to work....
Thats not the point though...they were being deceptive and so some kind of consequence was needed. I know it may sound a bit over the top, but because they are trying to get these kids to cope with far worse temptations, they need to react strongly.
I agree with what one of the girls themselves said, actually.
I can't for the life of me recall her name but she said, if memory serves, :"I think this is quite pathetic, actually".
My sentiments exactly.
Strict discipline, certainly! Overbearing and unnecessary bullying, absolutely not!
If you don't believe that underneath all the bluster that these were, on the whole, ordinary, articulate teenagers, then I suggest you get out more.
My point is, they're not training dogs here. These are teenagers and teenagers are going to act like teenagers, not like little goody-goodies. I'd hardly call handling a cigarette butt and passing it around the crime of the century, would you? By the way, I hope the TV crew were REALLY proud of themselves there. Good one.
Thankfully, though probably because they were desperate to get out, none of them reacted badly to this really rather pathetic and overbearing piece of authoritarianism.
There was little need for it and most people know that.
Yahuh, Georgie certainly learnt her lesson and she was one of the worst ones that arrived there- shows their techniques worked.
Well, that's debatable. Goergie seemed to find once she was out of Brat Camp, she was once again prone to temptation and her mother has had to sell her house in order to help get her back there.
There's definitely plently of evidence to say Brat Camp works in what seems to be the majority of cases. I just think it's naive to think it works in every case.
adding to stevo's post Julia's mother was quoted as saying she hadn't noticed a difference and other sources reveal that Lydia is still struggling with temptation. In another thread I posted several abstracts of peer reviewed journals supporting the theroy that authoritarian regimes are counter productive.
all the brat's knew smoking in the camp is banned,so who ever picked up the butt broke a rule, and deserved to be punished, but who ever found the butt told the other brat's or some of them,so infact even talking about trying to smoke it were also breaking the rule's.
I'm puzzled, how is Lydia supposed to be still struggling with temptation ? Do you know her ?

that was so harsh if any of u u girls read this i feel 4 u so much n if 1 of u councilers or wot eva ur call are reading that was so collld man lik dude y?
Oh well i suppose it's just entertainment...for me anyway. Maybe the scheme didn't fully work on the girls but at the end of the day, (or six months in their cases lol)they did learn more about themselves and started to think more about the actions they took. Bratcamp was provided more solely for the purpose that they find their inner selves and realise the difference between right and wrong. In this case, all girls did learn how their attitudes should change and Aspen definetely did make a change to each of the girls' life;it did something about the 'errors of their ways' instead of putting it aside. (I quoted Georgie there ) Ooh i sounded intellectual, kind of

Georgies mother didnt HAVE to sell her house! She chose to, it was also a DECISION on Georgies behalf to go back to aspen for a year so she didnt fall back into the temptation! She wasn't forced to go back and i admire her for that decision! As well as her mother.
Oh and by the way i think the no smoking rule sucked! Loads of people smoke in this day and age and to force somebody to stop smoking is down right OUT OF ORDER! To stop smoking it should be that persons choice!
