I’ve tried to whittle my list of remaining questions down as I fear I may try even your patience (which has been boundless so far).

Any way here goes – usual caveat of ignore anything you consider remotely intrusive.

1. Did your school friends know you were going (I presume you left at the start of the summer holidays and returned mid September) and did they immediately notice the difference in you on your return (nice tan by the way!).

2. Were you able to see a preview of the series before it was transmitted or did you have to watch it episode by episode with the rest of us?

3. What was the reaction of your family, friends and school friends to you and your behaviour in the program (tip toe into school on a Thursday morning keeping your head down or stroll decisively through the gates)?

4. Did you think C4 have fairly represented how you were before you left and what happened whilst you were over there? In particular the earlier episodes which showed you a bit on the fierce side (Whilst not up to Lucy's standards, you would have terrified me!).

5. How long and what form did the graduation process take (it seems to involve a re-bonding with parents). Was there an effort to gradually reintroduce you to civilisation as part of the process? (Julia made a very deep comment about it being “it’s a big thing leaving the wilderness”)

6. How did you find being back in a crowded environment – e.g. Wilderness one minute, Salt Lake City Airport next? I think I would have freaked!

7. Whilst in your shelters didn’t the rain blow in under the gaps below the shelter roof – did you have bivouac bags or did you just sleep just in a sleeping bag on a mat and get wet?

8. As you moved up through each stage the equipment provided seemed to improve (I recall Julia having a proper rucksack at the end and proper boots) was this a “reward” and were they removed if you demoted?

9. Your “how to light a fire lesson” to your father in the field was very educational and impressive – but what is the significance of dried rabbit/cow you know what Smile (no wonder he thought you were taking the p**s)

10. From one of your previous responses it sounds like you were conditioned whilst at Aspen to take one day at a time – did you have a perception of how many days/weeks were passing or did it become a bit like Groundhog Day!

Thanks for your patience!

Alan

Ps looking forward to the book (only problem is finding you to obtain a copy when its ready!) Frown

My school friends did know I was going, after I had given them the definate YES. When I came back from Utah my first challenege I had was to illinate the people I didn't want in my life anymore. That included my best friend and unfortunatly I haven't really spoken to her since my return. So the people I did still know and were friends with saw the change, The others didn't get the chance. I came back Late October.

I saw the show before everyone else, We had editing rights therefore they had to show us something.

I was very nervous about going to school on Thursdays as I never really knew what the actions of people were going to be. Thankfully I have a fantastic handfull of friends that have supported me when people have shouted "BRAT" in the corridor, I was expecting it, but it does get me down sometimes. I have learnt skills to deal with this kind of behavior - not from Aspen, but from myself, I know that the actions I recieve from people is what I probably would of said to someone else if tehy had been in my possition.

I am not to fussed about how C4 showed me, I just wish they would have shown the bits when we all were laughing and at our most happiest time. The was I was percieved was as accurate as possible, giving the footage and time they had from me. I was increadibly uncompliant.

The Grad for Myself, Danni and Julie lasted about three days, it consisted of: Hiking to some cars, Getting a car ride to Grad site (Didn't happen often that we were put in cars, I recall twice - from the mountains to the desert transistion and Grad) Making solo sites for us and our parents, lots of feelings checks and the second weekly bath. Then we had to run 1/2 mile to our parents. The happiest moment of my life.

I didn't (and still don't) like being around alot of people - I can't get my head around it and I get a little frantic. Before Utah I loved being around lots of people. So yes it was abit horrible at first, Now I just get out of situations like that bu moving to a side, Or I plug myself into my iPod.

Our shelters were set up in a certain way that the rain would drain off them - the key was to build your shelter as close to the ground but still making sure the tarp was tight, We had a ground sheet which the water sometimes ran under, depending on how heavy it was raining. We had a sleeping pad and a waterproof worm sleeping bag. I got wet on one occasion when I was too lazy to make a proper shelter, That taught me a lesson VERY quickly.

As we got up a level the "pack" changed, At first we has to make out packs using the tarp, then we got a pack frame (after making 3 good mouse packs (just tarp) but you could be any level to have this) and then finally when you are Buffalo you recieve a internal pack. The boots never change We get good hiking boots from day one, and a pair of converses.

Basically if have have dried rabbit or cow crap then it makes the ember grow and you have more chance of getting a flame.

Every Wednesday we had staff exchange, new food, clean clothes ans the therapist came so we were aware of when a week went by but other than that I wasn't aware how long I had been there all the time. We also wrote a diary everyday so I could recall the days going by aswell

Thank you for all your questions!
Hope you enjoy reading my answers!
Anymore feel free to ask!

Thank you yet again for your full responses to my many questions. I very much enjoyed reading them.

I had intended that the last set of questions would be my last, but as you seem to enjoy answering them as much as I do in asking them (well you keep asking for more and plenty of people seem to be reading the thread!), I have taken the liberty of sending you more … Poppy runs screaming for the door Smile

So here goes … back to Utah once more.

1. How did you manage to obtain the time off from school – you must have missed at least 5/6 weeks and at the start of term as well (did you manage to get yourself excluded for smoking behind the bike sheds) Red Face

2. Were you expecting the staff to physically restrain you and were you shocked at the aggressive behaviour of some of the other girls. Did you feel safe – Lucy was a real eye opener?

3. Did you know how far you would be hiking each day and the type of terrain you would be crossing e.g. were you told how long/hard each day was going to be or was it just walk until told to stop?

4. How many hours did you walk (roughly) each day - assuming that you were allowed a watch e.g. would six hours be a long day, two short?

5. Did you see any other groups of “brats” whilst out there in the wilderness?

6. Was the terrain as remote as portrayed in the series e.g. were you crossing roads, farms or literally out in the wilds – I bet the stars were clear (enough for me to desperately wish to be there. I am so jealous!)

7. At what stage did you recognise that you were changing in your attitude and expectations of life – solo?

8. What was “quest”?

9. What was your lowest point of your time at Aspen?

10. What were the greatest influences in changing in your behaviour and were you influenced to change your behaviour by seeing how others in your group were changing e.g. Georgie, peer pressure?

11. Did you feel ready to graduate with Rosie, Georgie and Lydia or did you accept that you still had some “loose ends” to tidy up. (Danni obviously felt ready as she seemed very upset not to be graduating)

12. I would imagine that it must have been very emotional when the group (which by this stage appeared to have bonded so well) was split at the first graduation and then at such short notice. Did you have any idea that anyone was about to graduate or was it a complete surprise/shock?

13. Have you acquired a passion for the outdoors (assuming you did not already have it) or do you loath it – I revel in the freedom of space and tranquillity, but not dirt and rain!

14. Are you in touch with anybody at Aspen and do you intend to return there (or to Utah?)

15. There are stories of people who have slept outdoors for lengthy periods finding it difficult to sleep in a bed as they find it to soft – often they end up sleeping on the floor alongside the bed until they reacclimatise. Did you have this problem?

16. Was it a huge shock returning to school – it must have been difficult for your friends to appreciate the significance/scope of the experience you had undergone (at least until they saw the program) and I would have thought school must have seemed very tame, pedestrian and oppressive after three months living rough in the fresh air.

No rush answering them as I know you have work and I have another room to decorate (refurbishing a house!)

Bye for now

Cheers

Alan

From my understading it's a common thing... they do it to get rid of old posts, clean-up and what not, but if it's individual posts then I guess you have a right to question this.

Lol.. school were more than happy to support the decision that I had make to go to Utah to become a better person. I think there was a slight bit of relief for them to, they didn't have to end up expelling me.

I never thought I would be at a camp where they used physical force on me, But when it was needed it was used, at no other time did that happen. The 6 other girls didn't ever scare me, I was worried about my safty at times, but that wasn't caused by the issues the other girls had. It was more to do with the fact I though my legs would drop off from hiking so much... Instead it was the weight that dropped off me : ]

We were never told future information which included hiking time and distance. It was a case of lets go and see how long it was going to be untill we got to camp.

We weren't allowed a watch or to know the time of day, I reckon we walked for about 9 - 15 + hours a day.

Yes on a few occasions but they were miles away from us, but we caught glimpses, however, on night a boys group hiked right past us and saw us all!

We hiked and often came across dirt tracks, but what you see is what you really got - miles and miles of nothing.. there was the odd ranch sometimes though - but they were always deserted.

Solo's did help me along the way to recovery but for me it was looking up one night and looking at the stars and thinking how beautiful they were and how whilst at home I never had taken time to look at the little things that made me a good person. That is what I needed to focus on and now do.

Quest in the Quest back to the group, you have to do a number of essays(not long) and just show that you are ready to join the group again.

I don't really know how to answer that, maybe it was realising that the way I had been living my life was on the road to self destruction.

Thats simple, Norman, He believed in me.

I didn't want to graduate when I did, I still don't feel ready to go out into the outside world... even though I do everyday. I havent come back perfect I still have my moments, they are rare, but they happen. I am glad I am home though now : ]

Complete and utter shock. I didn't want them to go. But I was proud of them.

I live on a shooting estate so I have always had to enjoy the outdoors, There isnt anything better to do around here. But I supose I respect it more.

I still speak to Lauren on occasion and also Emily and Norman, I try and email the staff alot... But I want to write so much and then forget it all so I send them one a month, and reply to whenever they email me. I am going back to Utah to work for a year while I am on GAP - before UNI

The first night I slept in a bed it was horrible I didn't sleep, It wasn't hard enough, It was like that for a few weeks.... Now I cant give up my bed.. .I love it so much!

When I returned to school I was very much in shock. the busyness confussed me and I didn't really feel welcomed as all my old friends were all in seperate friendship groups and I had peoples voices constantly echoing how was it. I didn't settle in for a few days. Now everything is back to normal!

Pleasure as always
Poppy xx

Thank you again for your full responses to my questions.

I have enjoyed our correspondence enormously so it is with a heavy heart that I say I think perhaps that the time has come for me to take my leave. Before doing so, if I may, some final words.

It’s not everyday that one is allowed to follow the journey of a person who as I said of you in my original post “arriving as an immature, headstrong aggressive girl and returning home a calm mature young woman”. Your responses to my questions have reinforced my initial impression a hundred fold.

You will know from reading my initial post that the whole series had a profound impact on me. I was going to say that the additional background information you provided in response to my many, many, questions had been the icing on the cake, but frankly the depth, honesty and openness of your replies have moved me as deeply as the series itself and left me feeling very humble. It has been a privilege to be allowed into such a personal aspect of your life and I hope everyone else who has read your responses appreciates your generosity in being so frank.

What an enviable position to be in when your future children ask you what you were like in your teens. You will be able to say I was a brat once – and then show them the film of your triumph.

So thank you once again – perhaps (if you are not to busy) we might arrange to meet again, here in the Brat Camp forum, this time next year and you can let us all know how you are getting along with your book – “I once was a brat and now I’m a star” Please put me down for an autographed copy.

Goodbye and good luck!

With very best wishes

Alan

Hey Poppy you should write that book. I self published a book and it was a lot of work but it cost about £3000, its affordable and we sold out. Theres a good printer called Antony Rowe in Wiltshire that does short runs. You have to do your own publicity but I bet you could do that. I think a lot of people would like to know how you got to be such a brat in the first place, cause obviously you're an intelligent and sensitive person. Something changed you in Utah but what made you like that to start with I wonder. I for one would be very interested in a book if you ever wrote it and I bet it would get quite a lot of media attention which is the main thing for selling it. We made a couple of thousand pounds profit on our little book, so its not even as if you need to make a big financial sacrifice, you could end up making money.....

ahaha the pictures are of me, but me and 2 friends (who are big myspace users) thought it would be funny to make a fake as they often have people pretending to be them...
tbh I wouldnt have that as my url anyway, it's kind of pathetic.
