So you come on coz you fancy taking a Penalty.
You get yourself so worked up that you forget to listen out for the Ref's whistle and hit it to the right. So the Keeper's now easily second guessed you dives left and makes a comfortable save Confused

at least he had the bottle, he's scored plenty for penalties for liverpool, in tough situations too, he's not the first and won't be the last to miss, so get off his back!!!

I'm glad he came on. Its better that he missed rather than Lennon. I think that was the thinking that it wouldn't be fair for Lennon who is only young to have to deal with that pressure when he's only just broken into the team.

He may well have scored his penalty but had he not it would have been a lot to carry on his young shoulders. Much better that the older players have that pressure.

I'm not knocking is bottle ST just the fact that he made a fundamental error in not listening for the Ref's whistle.

You sure LB?
Wouldn't he have placed the ball down, run at it at 73mph, then got caught in a dilemma of whether to shoot at goal, pass it to a team mate, or just run into the corner? Wink

Hey there's a 20 yr old Ukrainan (Milevsky I think) who in his 1st senior appearence stepped up and chipped his penalty in the shootout against the Swiss. We've gotta stop being so negative and put things into perspective a penalty is not sooooooo hard. If we continue with this attitude of 'lets protect him from taking a penalty' he'l never have the confidence when the need arises and we'l never win a shootout.
Let's not forget an 18 yr old Owen scored his pen in the '98 shootout.

if he had , would it have been any worse than the established pros ? in the short time he was on the pitch with 11 players did he not set up englands best chance ? yes he did and he would have continued to terrorize portugal but we all know what happened next.
i am to lennon what mike parry is to rooney.

Lets not forget that at least all the England pens were on target...Better than the 'more skillfull' Portugese could manage.
All it came down to was a keeper whose coach is obviously Derren Brown!

One of the best chances...But he sould have hit it before Rooney sliced it, or even before he took it past the last defender...
But it's all hindsight now. Hopefully he'll grow a bit more this season, and get some more confidence in front of goal by the time the Euros come round

fair enough, but i would imagine its only too easy to make a mistake like that in the quarter finals of the world cup with the rowd screaming and your heart pumping and head banging, even if he'd scored it we would still have gone out

He scored in the same position and run, for Spurs last season, had Rooney not of taken it away from him i am sure we would be in the semi's now, Rooney was so frustrated and panicked and sliced it. But if Lennon had of caught the rebound better and got some power on it that would of been a goal, as well as Lampard trying to be flash with a volley, when he had all the time in the world to of brought the ball down, there were a couple of others as well, this is something Portugal didnt have all game. We could easily of won 3 or 4 nil, but we didnt have the rub of the green, thats football for ya, but life goes on, and there is always next time, the one good thing about England and the quality of players we produce, is that we will be there next time

'The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It's about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom.' - Danny Blanchflower

Anyone who takes a penalty has to be applauded for having the guts to do it, so don't knock them for it.

On a more serious note that has been overlooked, I read that in the last 4 or 5 shoot-outs, an England keeper has saved just one penalty, Seaman against Spain in Euro 96. Now as a team game, it's easy to sit and blame the takers for missing, but isn't it just as important to save them and not just hope that the opposition hit the post/bar/car park?

I always feel the keeper with the bigger personality wins the shootout.

Yeah, you could be right. Mind you, it's easier to get it past a keeper of Robinsons height than Lehmann's

True. But they (Lehmann and Robinson) are both of similar ability. I feel that in a shoot out situation Lehmann has more of a personality whereas Roninson's a bit of a nobody. Don't forget Ricardo is pretty slight for a keeper.
I remember during the CL Dudek acting stupid pretty much won it for Liverpool, mind games or whatever I don't know.
