10 years after leading England to the Euro 96 semis and that defeat against Germany Terry Venables is set to take a part in the new set up under Steve Mclaren.
I don't rate him at all. I think he's lived of the 2 successes he's had and, on ITV, loves the sound of his own voice too much. And, as for his Sven impersonation....
I heard a story that sums him up perfectly. When he bought into Tottenham, he found out that, in the Bill Nicholson Suite, there was a dancefloor which was one of the highest quality floors in Europe. He had this dug up and swapped it with the one in his extremely tacky Scribes West club. Doubtless so that his guests could listen to the irritating Razor Ruddock do another of his 'World Famous Elvis impressions'.

Bad news for England IMO
I disagree, Venables and Bobby Robson are the two most experienced and knowledgable tacticians England have. They have both done fantastically well in Europe and know the European and International game. Venables has one fault, he loves to meddle in other areas(finance and boardroom), but as an assistant for the England team, he will not be doing either of those, but it will be seen if McClaren is to arrogant to listen to Venables or not.
'The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It's about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom.' - Danny Blanchflower
We'll have to disagre, Wot's. I'm not sure about the success in Europe bit. OK, he got Barca to a European Cup Final and England to a Euro 96 semi, but he was only in charge of the England team for 5 or 6 games. See if he'd got them through a qualifying campaign, and not half a dozen games in a tournament where they had home advantage, yet still couldn't win the thing
I think it's all about sorting out the coach's position. Are we convinced that Steve McClaren is the permanent choice? (Surely not, they're having a laugh) Or is he some sort of temporary appointment? Tel is definitely a step in the right direction, but another foreign one like Scolari would suit me.
One's wit covers a whole bunch of repressed anger and anxiety, apparently.
I'm all for El Tel being on the England staff. I don't think it could do any harm, and he is one of the best England manager's I've seen in my lifetime.
He does like the christmas tree formation a bit too much tho.
Just read a full page article in today's Grauniad and it really does look like McClaren is staying in the job. (I must be really naive ) I was convinced, as I'm sure most Boro fans are, that he was just a figurehead until they got someone else. Plus the fact that we appointed Southgate instead of a credible Premiership type coach, as though McClaren could come back at some point. Oh Dear! Let's hope they prove me wrong, I'll be the first to admit it........

There was a lot of criticism when he took over as he didnt employ the traditional brazil style football. He did take over when they were struggling to qualify for the WC. Dropped the playboy players and brought in some youth. He is the Allardyce of Brazil but has been successful.
Then he won the WC though and everyone said he was a genius...except for a fair few Brazilian fans that didnt like his style of play so he left/was replaced cant remember which.
