I've always wondered why Les was never signed by one of the big boys in the Premiership.

I believe he was one of the best strikers in the premiership era. Add to this the fact that he didn't seem to mind which part of the country the club was, he was a top pro who looked after himself.

I wonder why the likes of SAF, Arsene Wenger & Roy Evans etc never saw fit to go for him? Confused

He was an integral part of the best Newcastle side for years, and they were a top 5 club at the time

he was one of the laziest players i have ever seen ....given that and that even spud fans had shirts with no 9 and injured printed as the name should give an indicator as to why he never quite made it as far as he could.

With my sensible head on today Big Grin.

Its not as if Arsenal could ever compete with the money Newcastle offered for him. As andy said they were a top 5 club at the time with the second biggest ground...hardly small fry.

He probably felt Newcastle were about to emerge as the next dominant power. Its easy for us in hindsight to disect these decisions though Big Grin. I remember seeing a teenage Owen interview saying he signed for Liverpool over Man Utd and Arsenal because they were the team that won trophies...ooops. Then of course he left to go to Madrid from Liverpool so he could win the European cup....oops.

ferdinand wasnt lazy, he was injury prone and needed 5 good chances to score 1 goal.

He was very lazy you should replay some of his last games. He never tackled back and would walk back after every move forward. Might have been because of his injuries he was like that though. As my sister said a groan would go round the ground when he went into a tackle as they knew he would soon be off the pitch. I may have been influenced by her though as she was constantly moaning about him.

in his last games he could be accused of laziness but i think he just couldnt do it any more, one of the resons for his injuries was that he went for every ball in his heyday, rare game it was when he didnt end up on the floor holding his head.

I'm probably being a bit harsh with him then. Thats the problem when players dont retire when they should. It taints the end of their career.

Ferdinand was a great player and he was not lazy, that statement doesnt even make sense. Les was one of the best in our game at holding the ball up, and he was a great header of the ball, he was injured alot because of his no fear attitude.

Well my sisters a spud fan and she goes to about half the home games every year. It was coming from her so take it up with her... I could care less if you think it makes sense or not frankly.

I also happen to agree with her but im biased.

Just a quick question... why post this question then?

I do agree with you though, Capt, about him thinking that Newcastle would be the next dominant power. At the time he played for them, they looked like they would be. But it was Keegan leaving and some disastrous decisions in appointing coaches that they didn't kick on from that season, although Robson tried his best to get things on track

Its not a question its a statement and other people do read this board other than Wots. Whos opinion i do care about otherwise it would become pointless posting here.
