While I was against booing Lampard before he's had a touch of the ball and the Fat Frank jibs, the booing of P Neville, Hargreaves, Crouch, Bentley etc.

I think England players deserved to be booed this weekend because they were rubbish and let the nation down. Booing for football reasons is always healthy, long may it continue.

Agreed. If they put in half the effort for their country as they do for their clubs, I'm sure England wouldn't have had much difficulty qualifying.

But then there's the coach... Ninja

Well i dont think Liverpool fans will mind Stevie G getting booed every week if he plays like he did the other day

I dont think anyone can doubt Stevie's commitment to club or country, sure i will admit he was poor on wednesday, along with EVERYONE else, but he always tries his best and plays his heart out, not something you can say about certain other players. Besides, i would rather see Liverpool win the League than England win the World Cup, and i dont care how unpatriotic that sounds, i know which would give me more pleasure!! (although both are highly unlikely Big Grin Frown)

Watching him playing for England only furthered my 'overrated' tag i gave him recently.. shame as i would gladly have him prove me wrong.. and i was one of many who moaned "why couldn't he do that for England' after your game this weekend..

Along with every other England player though, he's not the only one who didnt perform, and over time he's performed better for england than a lot of players, though i will agree never the same as his club level, but then if you're playing with unfamiliar players it makes sense you'd never play quite as well for your country no matter who you are

I can now reveal that the only player I have ever booed from the start of a game is Ronaldo.

That goes for every single international player for every country. He has played more games with the likes of Cole, Lampard and Beckham in midfield than a large number of players who have just joined their clubs. For a number of players the desire and effort doesnt seem to be there and he is one of them. I still remember him saying there will be plenty more tournaments after having his hernia sorted during the last Euro finals rather than during the season. Only if you qualify Stevie only if you qualify... and picked...

But truthfully, how many England players do you think have put more effort in than Stevie over the last 6 years or so?

John Terry is the one that probably comes closest

Owen when fit, Hargreaves when fit, Beckham, SWP. Most of the players in the fringe of the team will play 100%. Gerrard does it for his club but for country when the chips are down he just starts pinging long balls. Either he is that tactically stupid or he refuses to run himself into the ground when theres a PL match coming up a few days after. As I said there are a number that dont and its not just him.

I'm sorry CV but i cant agree over the last six or seven years Owen, Hargreaves, Beckham, SWP have done more for England, or tried harder, than Stevie. As you've said "when fit", so for me that rules Owen and Hargreaves out, you're no good on the sidelines, no matter what talent you have, SWP hasnt played that much so maybe possibly Beckham has done more but i think Stevie tries his hardest in every game, i'll admit his passes dont always come off, a lot end up in with the fans but i think he works his socks off, a lot of teh time he's had to sit back and allow Lampard to go forward (not Wednesday admittedly) so hasn't maybe appeared to be controlling games or taking the team forward as he woudl for Liverpool where he rarely has to sit back ever.

Andy, i wouldnt argue with Terry, but even if you include he and Becks, thats but two of the dozens of the many players who've played, Gerrard seems to be taking an awful lot of stick for being Englands third best player/hardest worker in the last 6 years!

The sad thing is at the age of 30-whatever David Beckham is still the best England player.

Bottom line.

I agree with you.
Everything that we did at 2006 was caused by him in one way or another. Then that spud dropped him. He showed a bit of enthusiasm and class the other night.

which speaks volumes.

To Scouse there arent that many players that have played for 6-7 years for a start and im sorry but you cant exclude a player from your list because he is injured a lot. You asked who puts in more commitment not who is the best player to pick in terms of ability or fitness. Whatever the reason Gerrard is a very different player for England and is just my observation certainly not the only one though as i keep saying. It doesnt help that Lampard and Gerrard shouldnt play together esp if Rooney is playing as they all are best when playing in the same area.

I should have added that i am not sure its even concious in their part. You read comments like the one Gerrard came out with with the hernia op. Also Lampard prior to the Croatia game saying these are the games we excel at and can get up for. I start thinking well you should not be treating games differently, I cant imagine Chelsea going easy on Derby because any slip ups mean losing points in the title race and a bollocking from the boss.

well i think we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one, i respect your opinions but mine differ slightly. I was thinking of players like Ferdinand, Cole A, Cole J, Lampard, Bridge etc, few more fringe players too, i'll accept Beckham, Terry and Rooney (when fit) and yes, Hargreaves and Owen do try when fit, but i dont see them all touching Gerrard, maybe one or two at most

As for players injured, you are right about what i said, it was who tries hardest, but at the same time youre not much use if youre always injured are you. A world class player for me is someone who plays in 90%+ of games as well as plays well, doesnt matter how good you are if you're not on the pitch!
