The premier League are meeting to discuss drops in attendance. Link

Steve Cram claims that football has lost it's unpredictability, one of the major attractions of competitive sport. Link

Here's my solution. Cut out the dead wood. It's time to reduce the league. 16 teams. Seven go down, three come up. That'll spice to up a bit.

sadly i think you could only introduce that in two or three years time, i think 7 is to many, 4 could go though, only two coming up, give players fewer games

"One also has to question how much football there is on television and whether it's undermining attendances. I believe there is clear evidence that is the case."

Would be very interested to know what the last game "Sports minister" Richard Caborn last attended, or more meaningfully, paid to watch.
Whe I started going to top flight games, in the mid 80's, it cost me £3.50 to get in. Now it's not unusual to pay £65. I think that may have more to do with it than television rights

I agree cupra, between the amount on tv and the prices we have to pay at the gate puts people off, i'm a student and can't afford to get in to Parkhead, thats again another reason i follow scottish first div. team, St.Mirren its only on average £12 to get in, and see most of the time good footy.

St.Mirren usually have a decent crowd its usually around 3-4000, it may not be a lot but concidering they are in the 1st Div. and with close proximity(5 miles)to glasgow its decent enough!!

Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are getting weak?

Oh i forgot the question....

I don't think the premiership should reduce its numbers, we up here in Scotland are wanting to increase the numbers of top flight teams in the SPL.

How about a premiership 2 though, is that the answer??? with 5 up 5 down?? and 2 relegated to championship, that would give lesser teams a really bid kick up the ar5e ??

European Super League anyone?

Lose the top 3 or 4 from Spain, England, Italy, and the top two from Portugal, France, Germany etc..

It makes for what the Champions League is moving further and further towards and makes all the domestic leagues a lotmore competitive, you could still maintain a relagation/promotion structure each season.

Downside of course is that the ESL takes all the money and the best players and the viewers whilst the domestic leagues lose out on all that.

Worth considering though.

He wouldn't need to if he's following Everton.

Lol Slapmatt!
And Miss-P has a point...It's the same as why I follow BTCC, rather than WTCC...Cheeper and easier to follow if the races are just in one country, rather than all over the shop!

Bwahaha!

Travel wise there are obvious complications but consider that at the moment those teams in the Champs League and UEFA Cup have to travel (as do the fans obviously) around Europe for these games AS WELL as playing and travelling for the League games.

What youre suggesting you modify the format just to suit the ''big teams'' that is complete bollox!
What pressure needs to be releived exactly? Chelsea reached the semi final of the champs league, final of the carling cup and still lost just one game in the premiership so it hasnt harmed them in any competition.

Whoever suggested relegating 7 teams hasn't thought this through. For a start, it would mean there'll be 28 teams in the Championship...

of course I've thought it through Roll Eyes

And what "The Championship"? Is that the comedy league that's on ITV on Sundays before the car parade?

i dont see it, you`ll still have up to ten teams desperate not to get relegated, and play for noting more than 1-0.

When I used to play table football we played first to 5 with the winner getting a quid. However, if you won 5-0 or came from 4-0 down to win 5-4 then you'd get 2 quid.

The Premiership should introduce something similar.

The points system should be:

3 points for a win
1 point for a draw

4 points if you win by 3 clear goals
2 points if you're losing at half time and come back to get a draw
4 points if you're losing at half time and come back to get a win

4 points if you win when the wind is blowing in a south-easterly direction and your nearest geographic rival loses by 2 clear goals or more.

Hold on...

Don't knock the Championship. There are some fine teams there. Crewe, Reading, Brighton, Everton to name a few...

YES! and we should be allowed to vote who they are. Or better still, relegate fifteen. That way my team have a chance of promotion.
