I know there's debate on whether he should be in the team but surely he's good enough to be in the squad. I think Mclaren might be going a little too far in trying to show his authority.
Also did Beckham know Mclaren was planning this and so gave up his captaincy before it was taken from him??
I'd say you are right, zeds. But then, didn't the same thing happen when Bobby robson took over as England manager years ago? He dropped Keegan, and England seemed to go on from that quite well. As long as Beckham doesn't throw his toys out of the pram like Keegan did, it should be ok
Yes but the time your referring to we see the greatest influx of English players in my lifetime, the likes of Waddle, Gazza etc. I don't quite see it this time around. Mclaren kept saying he wants to move in a different direction and yet we had a recall for P.Neville

The time when Keegan was dropped was a few years before Waddle and Gazza. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Robson take over after the 1982 World Cup?
Sorry Andy I got terribly confused. I found this NY Times article on Beckham of intrest. In particular the following paragraph:
"A right wing, Beckham doesn't dribble past opponents. He rarely gets into close-range shooting positions and the only goals he scores from open play are long shots. Although he has the stamina to run for 90 minutes, he no longer has much pace. He is also a poor tackler who regularly gets into trouble with referees for petulant behavior."
And yet he is still one of the best players to play in spain but dont forget this is a friendly, lets see what team he has when the big games comes around ( becks will b in the squad then)

Good old Yanks. they should stick to baseball and that sport played by 8 foot freaks
I think Beckham is one of the best footballers in the World. If you just remember how many goals were scored with his help.English team does not have any other footballer who can deliver the ball exactly in a right place and in a right moment. Also Beckham made English team very popular around the World. I stopped support and watch Manchester Un games when Bekham left them and so did many others.
In my oppinion, he's not one of the best of the best, but he is decent. Keeping him in the squad would be a good move I feel. Atleast have him as one of the first choice substitutes.
Originally posted by AndyCardiff: Yeah, he delivers great free kicks and crosses and works hard for his team, but his game is quite limited in other respects. He's no Ronaldinho
To be fair Ronaldinho was no Ronaldinho this last time round

Almost spot on. The only bit I would disagree with is "the only goals he scores from open play are long shots". How often does that happen? It's a long time since I've seen a pig fly. Personally I think there are a lot more negatives you could add to that list as well. What part of it do you disagree with Andy?
Zeds, according to El Tel the removal of Beckham had to be total. With Becks on the bench there's a chance the player playing in his position would fret about it. This may inhibit him and badly affect his performance. Which in turn may lead to the crowd getting on his back, and even worse, they might start chanting for the introduction of Beckham! Result, one players confidence shot to bits.
Nice one Steve!!!
---------------------------------------------- Please, ANYONE but Mourhino or Cap... oh bugger!
He's never really had much pace to start with, so to lose it? I don't understand. OK, he used to be petulant, but then he was joining in with the rest of the United team at the time. And we all know that he's never gone past players using dribbling skills. He's never had to, he uses other strengths to do that. By saying Beckham is a good dribbler is like saying Roberto Carlos is a good defender

No, sorry, I don't agree with this at all. You are basically saying that no other established player at any club has ever been dropped in favour of a youngster? Personally, I think this argument is nonsense. If a young player comes in, he's not going to be an unknown and most people will be aware of who he is and what ability he has. Say, SWP, for instance. Now, if Beckham is on the bench, and SWP is having a bad game, the crowd may start chanting for Beckham, but it is unlikely that SWP's confidence will be shot to bits. Sitting on the Chelsea bench for a season is more likely to do that. OK, he may be a bit down, but moist players reactions after one game is to bounce back. If they have a bad run of 6 or 7, then their confidence may be shot. But then, England will have found a replacement anyway. Or recalled a rejuvenated Beckham, determined not to let poor form hamper his performances in an England shirt again, just waiting for the next young prodigy to come along
