A lot is often made of the paradox in football where fans are often debating whether they prefer boring functional football (winning) over exciting enteraining (sometimes losing) football.
I can honestly say that I'd prefer my team (the mighty Orient) playing entertaining football that may not always result in 3 points. We are currently in League One and to be brutally honest we can't possibly go any higher, firstly, we don't have the stadium or infrastructure or indeed the financial muscle to be anywhere near competitive at that level. With all this in mind as long as we don't get relegated I want to turn up every week and be entertained with exapnsive risky football for my ridiculously over-priced ticket (£18).
Aside from my team I don't think I'd be able to gain too much pleasure from watching a functional winning side week in week out. There's a humanistic part to this argument also; while its great to see my side winning things, beyond this pleasure and bragging rights I as a supporter don't get anything in return (Except maybe even higher ticket prices in return). As fans in this country I feel we give far more than we get in return. If I was a Chelsea fan I'd buy match tickets, shirts, programmes and other marked up rubbish and in return I'd get at best a ruthless functional type of football but beyond seeing my team winning week in week out not a lot more. Chelsea will win the league this season in my opinion but this side will not be one that in 20 years time people will look back and say what a Great side that was, unlike the Liverpool side of the 80's known to be well ahead of their time in the style they played, the Milan side of the early 90's known for brilliant individual flair and the legendary Franco Baresi. In fact I think this Chelsea side is similar to the Juve side of the mid to late 90's who'd won pretty much everything year in year out but nobody will look up to that side or recall anything memorable from that team.
So I feel I'd rather see my team remembered and reverred in the long-run as opposed to winning cups to ensure profit margins are kept.
