Not sure what the benefits would be, actually. Not all countries have pro-refs, so would you take them from ther countries that do? Then you may only have refs from, say, 4 or 5 countries. And pro-refs are just as susceptible to the same errors as amateur ones. Just look at Poll in the WC. BTW, are you a ref or a linesman?

I'm not so sure that he is, i thought he was but he was on Sky Sports last night, he had been filmed teaching young kids in a school, that is not what i call a professional ref, i call that a professional p.e school teacher.

Well i looked it up. From the FA website: quote: In season 2006-2007 the Select Group, who officiate in the FA Premier League as well as other competitions, will consist of Seventeen Professional Referees
*S G Bennett (Kent FA) *M.L.Dean (Cheshire FA) *M Halsey (Lancashire FA) *G Poll (Hertfordshire FA) U Rennie (Sheffield & Hallamshire CFA) *H Webb (Sheffield & Hallamshire CFA) *M A Riley (West Riding FA) *R Styles (Hampshire FA) C Foy (Lancashire FA) P Dowd (Staffordshire FA) A Wiley (Staffordshire FA) D Gallagher (Oxfordshire FA) M Atkinson (West Riding FA) *M Clattenburg (Northumberland FA) P Walton (Northamptonshire FA) B Knight (London FA) *A Marriner (Birmingham FA) (* FIFA Referee)
Referees in this group receive an 'annual retainer' of £33,000 plus match fees for their commitment to training and development over several days each month in addition to their match commitments. Importantly, referees will be allowed to continue with their chosen careers.
Assistant referees in the Select Group will be appointed from a panel of 48 experienced officials and will receive an allowance for their time dedicated to training.
So he is paid 33,000 a year so that he can dedicate more time to the 'profession'. Obviously doesnt stop him moonlighting as a P.E. teacher. Obviously teachers are paid more than I thought and he doesnt want to give it up. Or is it more likely they just spend 6 weeks out in a year 'training' and they still do their old jobs (something that they said was taking up their time and stopped them becoming more professional).

obviously shouldnt have used the word moonlighting as they are allowed to continue their current career. But it does beg the question what is the point of making them professional if there is no difference to what they were before.

This is what i meant. For me a professional ref is not an ex or part time teacher. A professional should be someone who used to play the game at some level, and has understanding of it, instead of a majority of our so called professional refs.
