This is in no way a reaction to England going out & it is not his fault, but surely this is the end for the footballer formerly known as David Beckham?

I cannot see him playing in the Euro 08 qualifiers.

He is clearly shot at international level.

I know that the sponsors love him, but England need the best players out on the pitch.

It's OK for him to sell shirts for Real Madrid; after all, that is their priority nowadays, as they don't seem to win anything anymore, but for England, we need more than HRH the Prince of Madrid.

He's been great for England & United, but the time is right for him to announce his international retirement IMO.

I agree with your sentiment Syntax, but IMHO the first thing is to give the captaincy to Terry and see how the new manager sees whether he has Beckham in. It wasn't just him but Gerrard and Lampard who didn't do the biz on the field.

It's hard to say, but I think Beckhams's time is ending. He's just not the same as he was before. He doesnt move and score in the same way. His goals in the tournament seemed kinda fluked. Let's hope he can get back up to top standard again. It would be hard to imagine the England team without Beckham, although it's true that we need the best players.

Can he make it to another World Cup?...

you guys are whistling in the wind....

Now if we were getting Scolari, or another top of the bill manager, we may have had the big shake up some of you refer to. But lets face it, who were the biggest cheerleaders of McClaren? Exactly, Becks and Owen. Why? Because they know he won't alter the status quo.

So sorry, but this end of Sven celebration may as well be over right now. We are in for four more years of tripe, just this time he will do all the hand movements, shouting, pacing around, and table thumping...and of course not a single trophy!

What more could you expect from an English England manager? When English managers haven't won the league for 19 years. Or the European Cup for 22 years. They aren't going to suddenly find another gear and develop into an amazing manager. They are just going to be the same failiure, only on an international rather than domestic scene.

I'm sure McClaren's been championing Beckham.
Think he'll be there for 2008 but not for the next WC. Who's a definite to replace him?

Lennon is much more dangerous than the old fart Beckham. But Terry should not be given ny captaincy as he performs crap for England.

agreed, mclaren is a depressing choice of manager. hes going to be saddled with the failure of the sven era. guilty by association.

and beckham has never perfomed up to expectation in a world cup or european cup as far as im concerned

Beckham will be 33 in 2008 and we should start building a new team now. I do think its a shame that Becks has gone out injured. He had planned to give in his captaincy after the world cup, if we won or not, that is the reason for the tears when he was subbed. The w/c has proved its time for fresh blood, each time Lennon came on in the w/c he changed the game, and he is a massive plus for us, the crowds cheer when he came on in the Portugal said it all. I dont feel the same about Downing though, a great player but a bit predictable, plus Walcott going to the w/c was great experience. The future does look bright, the only good feeling i have towards the management is the experience of EL Tel. But i dont see Beckham being part of it, except from the bench. It will be strange watching the next w/c, with Beckham in the studio, but imo Beckham has been a great captain for us.

The blind faith in him by his coach(es?) means there is only one way Beckham will not be picked for England. By retiring. Can't see McLaren dropping him

I think this is the end of the road 4 beckham!!
Sven didn't av the guts drop him!
Now's es not captain there no need 4 him, we've got suitable replacements in LENNON and WRIGHT-PHILLIPS

David Beckham career R.I.P.

I think we still have a place for Beckham in the squad, but as a sub. His best days may be over but he has 6 years experience and respect as the England captain, he will be good to have around, but only if having him around doesnt upset the new captain. It will be interesting to see if he will be interested in a coaching position, with England in the next world cup.
