Well done Andy, you got two right out of three. You were wrong on question A.

E. The highest score in an International match was Australia's 31-0 defeat of American Samoa in a WC qualifier at Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia.

Striker Archie Thompson's 13 goals for Australia in the game, is also an international scoring record.

H. You were also right about Lothar Matthaus who played in '82,'86,'90,'94 and '98. But he only equalled the record previously set by Antonio Carbajal (Mexico), who kept goal in every competition from 1950-1966.

Two down, seven to go. All unanswered questions will be revealed at the end of the week! So keep trying peeps!

Sorry Wendy, wrong answer. This question is a difficult one which I don't expect anyone to get, so here's the answer:

C. The longest penalty shoot-out was in a West Riding amateur cup tie between Littletown FC and Storthes Hall at Heckmondwike, W. Yorkshire, on the 29th Dec, 2001. A total of 34 penalties were taken when the match ended 1-1 after extra time. All 34 penalties were scored - 17 apiece- until the match was abandoned due to the failing light.

Not a lot of people know that - but they do now! Smile

You're too good Scouse!

Yes it was Martin Palermo, he has the unfortunate record of missing three penalties in one international while playing for Argentina against Colombia in the 1999 Copa America held in Paraguay. Palermo first hit the bar, put the second into the crowd and the third was saved. Needless to say Argentina lost 3-0

That was my bad...I got a bit muddled when I told her that...it ended 11-10, and that's where I got the 21 penalties stuck in my noggin!
However, whilst looking for the result of that game I came up with this, which should knock the West Riding game into a hat! As follows...

LONGEST PENALTY SHOOT-OUT EVER

"After Nottingham Forest managed to dispatch the mighty Stockport in a thrilling 8-7 victory on penalties in the Worthington Cup, the conversation in the office is rife as to the highest scoring penalty shoot-out," said Rory Sewell. "Any ideas what the highest score is?"

Several of you point out the 1992 African Nations Cup Final between Ivory Coast and Ghana, which finished 11-10 to Ivory Coast on penalties. However, that doesn't even come close.

According to Seamus McCann, "the longest European penalty shoot-out I currently know of was on November 28 1996 in the Turkish FA Cup match between Genclerbirligi and Galatasaray.

"The match finished 1-1 after extra time and Genclerbirligi eventually won the shoot-out 17-16," he adds. "Of the 34 penalties taken, only one was missed. Spare a thought for the poor Galatasaray keeper, Hayrettin, who saw all 17 penalties go past him.

"However, in the 1988-89 Argentine Championship, penalties were taken after drawn matches for an extra point. In the match on November 20 1988 between Argentinos Juniors and Racing Club, which had finished 2-2, 44 penalties were taken before Argentinos emerged as 20-19 victors."

So there you go!
Longest Penalty shootout

The past is history...The future a mystery.
This moment is a gift...That's why it's the present.

It's just dawned on me. As the Littletown FC game was abandoned due to failing light at 17 goals apiece, I assume the shoot-out was continued at a later date to get a final result. It's conceiveable they eventually broke the record this way!

As everyone seems to have given up, here are the answers to the questions you didn't get:

F. The most goals scored in a season was by William 'Dixie' Dean, who scored 60 goals in 39 matches for Everton in 1927/28. With three more in cup ties and 19 in representative matches, Dean's total was 82.
