Forget what the "special one" says, Sven(or Beckham)has dropped Carrick for Hargreaves, he breaks up play but doesnt have that killer pass or cannot read the game, and more important, Hargreaves wont do the job that a holding midfielder is meant to do, hold the midfield and protect the back four. I hate to say it but i dont see anything different happening today, a poor performance, but this time we will be coming home.

Are you trying to say Hargreaves had a poor game because I thought he was our best player today. He is a holding midfield player (the Germans prectically invented the role) its where he plays best. We could have swapped lampard with anyone on the bench and made a massive improvement though.

He had a great game, our best player, but he is not in the mould of Carrick as a holding midfielder, he showed in the first half that he is not to sure how to play the role, as we see a holding midfieder, all the first half Rio couldnt get the ball out of defence because he wouldnt make himself open to recieve passes, that is why i dont like him playing that role, he is great at breaking up play and going forward though, if we had to play that system it would of been better to of dropped Lampard and played him in his position

Not at all, he is not a good holding midfielder, but he surprised me how well he played going forward, with Carrick in the team he would of given the team outlets and stopped the Portugese from playing even more than we did

Well i think we both agree that lampard should have been dropped.
I think both carrick and hargreaves can play the holding midfield role, they are different types of players though. I originally said carrick should play instead of lampard or gerrard. I wouldnt have argued if carrick started either. Just wish some of the other England players had half the game Hargreaves played.
Why can Germany play Frings and Ballack (essentially their Lampard and Gerrard) and accomodate them in a system, but england find it hard to get their best 2 midfielders (allegedly) to gel?

I have long believed that Stevie. G and Lampard cant play together. Gerrard can change a game, he does it week in, week out, and in the CL final and FA cup final, and Lampard just wants to get forward all the time and doesnt like to hold in midfield, they dont play as a pair. Bench Lampard and make Gerrard captain, it will lift him even more, and he will lead by example
