There are plenty of threads on here about which team people support, but nothing about why you actually support them. So why do you support your team?

I'm a Cardiff supporter as I was born in the city and Cardiff v Wrexham was the first game I was taken to by my Dad, way back in 1977! A 1-0 win and I have been hooked ever since

Manchester United supporter - Born and raised less than an hours drive away from Manc. My dad had supported them all his life, naturally being 4 years old, i wasn't going to support anyone else. (Regardless of the fact we weren't doing too great back then). Been to many games since, home, away, reserves, some good, some bad.

I was into Rugby League as a kid (still am) but to fit in at school when i was about 8 i decided to take an interest in footy, the first game i watched was Liverpool v Everton, and i think thats where Liverpool has stemmed from. Probably a p*ss poor reason i guess, but what started out as a social reasons has long been overtaken by obsession. Bar maybe Preston they are the two nearest teams to me, its not like i'm from London or Singapore and chose the Mancs!!

Supporting Liverpool came from my mums side of the family really, my dads side have always supported the mancs! (I live in Manchester myself but nevermind eh)

Erm...yeah when I was slightly older I learned about the whole Hillsborough situation, and my uncle had almost saved someone there only for the lad to die before he got to paramedics Frown And as for the Man Utd fans who have ever said anything nasty about Hillsborough, they werent there so they will never understand what it was like.

Frown that still makes your uncle a hero in my eyes for what he did. My mate lost his brother there, like you say, people who take the p*ss obviously have no clue what they are talking about. That said its hardly unknown for Liverpool fans to take the P out of the Munich disaster....

Supporting the proper reds and living in Manchester though, that must be fun!! Big Grin

Wow, hang on, you can't put that completely down to Man Utd fans! Plenty of other teams fans have made a fair amount of vile comments.

I've never heard a single crude or otherwise comment, made towards that situation from any other Manc fans i know, or any that have been around me at the various games i've been to. Not that i'm saying some don't make them but pointing the finger of blame towards us Man Utd fans isn't really fair.

In fact the best atmosphere games i have been to were those where we have played Liverpool. I was at the 2001 Charity Shield game in Cardiff, and although we lost, it was a brilliant atmosphere and we never had any sort of 'battles' we the Liverpool fans. (Although a few Cardiff fans gave as abuse from the surrounding pubs.) Again i know they aren't all like that.. (before Andy pipes in... Wink )

I wasn't having a go at you personally but i have been at a few games where the Utd fans have chanted about Hillsborough. Maybe the're not the only ones that do it, but i didnt say they were, but they do do it. And i did admit Liverpool fans sing about Munich so wasnt a one sided post!!

Either is very wrong though, there are some lines that shouldnt be crossed, even as banter

I was more refering to 'Amanda's' post as that was pretty much attacking Utd fans for something many are guilty of.

I can't believe that you bit in the first place. The original comment was a blatant one to ignore if ever I saw one.

I got the feeling 'Amanda' actually believed what she had posted, had no one corrected her, she may have believed it to be true. That's ignorance for you i guess.

Allow me to pipe in Wink Big Grin

I remember the game you are referring to and there actually was trouble that day, and the night before, but between Man United fans and Cardiff fans. I know that to be fact, but down here on days before major finals, there has been very, very little trouble since as the police have learned these lessons and the main Cardiff troublemakers are warned by the police to stay away or risk arrest.

On the subject of sick chanting, I remember going to London grounds in the early to mid 80's, a time when, anyone who remembers going to games in those days will tell you (huge terrace battles, National front recruiting openly on the terraces, pubs being turned over, the nightmare tube and train journeys, etc), could be both terrifying and exciting (I found them to be both, depending on the ground or result of the team whose end I was in!! Big Grin). These were the days of the non-stop Munich songs when United were in town. You know the ones, when fans take a deep breath and belt out the "Who's that...". I've even been at grounds when paper aeroplanes were thrown to the noise of "nnneeeeaaahhhh". And the songs were many.

But they were also the days when United fans would go to Elland Rd with a skeketon with "I'm Bill Shankly" written on a sash and wind up other fans about their own losses. so I hardly think they were in a position to get all sanctimonious about this sort of thing.

Sick chanting has no place in the game. End of.
