Grimmest place I know of is Goole by a country mile, although the north does have some shockingly depressing rugby league towns.

My ex used to live in Aylesbury, and that was a pretty grim place. So grim, in fact, that Kubrick filmed A Clockwork Orange there.

BTTMUQU
That 8loody stupid BT advert on the side of the page that cuts in half and falls across the screen.
It's just taken me 5 minutes to update my user profile as I inadvertantly kept clicking on the advert.
Enough to make you want to switch from BT - if I hadn't already!
And Tow Law is another grim place - my wifes grandparents lived there, awful place.

Greame Souness being a pundit on Sky is rather annoying. The man has proved that he knows absolutely bubkiss about football throughout his managerial career.

Delia Smith, her husband, the Norwich board and all those so called fans holding up red cards today. Shameful.

What was expected after the show of red cards before kick off? New football fans with short memories.

That's a bit harsh, before the game, not exactly creating the best environment for a win! Looking from afar I do think he deserves the Spanish archer though - they've been naff since they went down from the Premier League. Apparently Alan Curbishley was spotted in the crowd at that game.

I love those rumours. I was at the game and I can tell you that Alan Curbishley was not there. However, I was sitting next to Helenio Herrera, Rinus Michels, Valeriy Lobanovskiy and Bill Shankly. They aren't really dead, but all live together in a cottage near Cromer. However, I can't confirm if any of them are interested in the job as Helenio's English is still a little bit rusty despite having spent all of the last nine years in England (it's difficult to get a foreign holiday when your passport says your dead).

People who applaud at the end of a film at the cinema. Like the director or actors are there. . . . THERE NOT! Stop it . . it's pompous and affected.

I heard that rumour as well but the chances of him being there are almost as remote as the chances of me popping the 3 miles down the road to see Norwich play anytime soon!

The same individuals are likely to be those who applaud the TV at half-time in a football match, most noticeably down at the local pub. My intuition would tell me that this habit was spawned by a) SKY TV's Soccer Am and b) The Americans.

Worse places than Coventry? Jesus, folks, what sewer do you live in? It's daft that people think - not even think, rather assume - that the north has the most depressing, horrid places in England. A visit to any southern or Midlands town of any note reveals that England is a directionless cesspoll of social decay no matter where you are.
When in Rome, do the Romans.

I went to Swindon once. It has a bizarre roundabout. That's the best thing about it. Never been to Coventry, but I can imagine that it is also rubbish.

The Magic Roundabout no less.
What a pit Swindon is. I worked there for a bit last year.
Can't honestly see myself ever going back.

I still have nightmares from when I did my Pass Plus and my instructor took me to the magic roundabout.
ONCE I LIVED IN CAPITALS, MY LIFE INTENSELY PHALLIC. but now i'm sadly lowercase with the occasional italic.

That was cruel of them. There are some s*holes in Scotland too, of course. Cumbernauld is perhaps my least favourite big town. It looks like the Soviets invaded in 1963, built a few things, then decided that Afghanistan would be more suitable and left. There are some scary wee villages (some presided over by Christopher Lee wannabes, probably) and some really dull ones as well.

Everyone seems to be moaning about what they interpret to be the arse-end of Britain - does anywhere rank favourably amongst any of you or is it all depressing?

I think Manchester is a fantastic city. I would love London to be more like Manchester, but unfortunately, I suspect it'll turn out the other way round. Edinburgh's pretty awesome too. As for crappy places, Cardiff has to rank numero uno on my list of shame. What an absolute hole. Even the locals get beaten up by the valley boys if they can't speak fluent Welsh. Boyo. Notable mentions to Solihull, Middlesbrough and, of course, Glasgow.

Views on a place are subjective sure, but I've lived in Cardiff for a bit and I've never heard of anyone being beaten up for not speaking fluent Welsh at all. I've never heard anyone say boyo to be honest either. I have to say as well I really wouldn't be surprised if more people actually spoke Welsh in Cardiff than in the Valleys. Some of the most heavily subscribed schools in the city only teach in Welsh. Cardiff's a friendly place, certainly a lot less angry and violent than a lot of English cities and (well you'll have to take my word for this!) but loads of people I know agree. It's a bit insular though, but that's a bit like Wales in general IMHO, I don't think I've ever seen a foreign paper even in the central WH Smith or anywhere - even sort of standard ones like USA Today or something at the railway station
