Could someone please claify what "tapping up" entails. An article on the main Football Italia website has a story regarding Kaka. It states that relation between Real and Milan is going down the pan because Real keep "taking to Kaka". Is this not illegal, is this not what Ashley Cole got fined for last season?

Just goes to show what a 'classy' outfit Real really is.

It's not the same case of A.Cole. Real just continue to ask MILAN to sale KAKA, not ask KAKA to come there. but Chelsea talked to A. Cole directly and ask him to go. that is illegal. They can only ask the CLUB to sell when that player is still have contract with his original club.

If you believe the Press, "tapping up" is prevalent all over football, especially in England!
It all stems from greedy agents and the likes of such slime who have crept into the game over the years.
They are not interested in players or football. Their bottom line is MONEY Mad

It was'nt me!!

While this is technically true, repeatedly announcing in the newspapers that they want players x, y, and z, is pretty much tantamount to the same thing. Official (or semi-official) announcements from a club employee, serving or prospective, or associate should also be banned.

Quite.

The rules are quite clear - if a club wishes to buy a player, they must approach the club which currently employs him. They can't simply go to the player/his agent and ask if he'd like to join them.

Real - and would-be officials of Real - have a habit of annoucing via Marca that they are going to sign player 'x', which, as BJT observes, is tantamount to going to the player and asking him if he'd like to join, without approaching the current employer.

It is, though, slightly ironic that Man Utd are complaining about the RVN situation, since they appear to be forgetting that RVN's previous club (PSV? I forget) complained bitterly that Siralex himself had 'tapped up' Van Nistelrooy...

Well down this way if you were tapping up a girl you'd basically be trying to get in her pants.

Ferguson kept ringing RVN during his recovery to reassure him that he was still desirable to Man U inspite of his injury, even though he was a PSV player at that time. That is simply so blatantly against the rules that it can only be a case of Man U influence that prevented them getting in trouble Red Face
