24 thousand POUNDS? Obviously it's not a fortune in London and probably not anywhere these days, certainly in terms of buying property if you're single, but is it really THAT crap?
I'm of the opinion that the idea London's overpriced is a bit of a myth (property aside, that is). Prices in the rest of the UK are creeping up to meet those in the smoke - drinking and eating out doesn't seem too much more than Coventry on the rare occasions I go to London. Tube's too expensive though. Avoid the tube, buying/renting and touisty places and it's no different to anywhere else.
And nudger - 24k in Manchester's big money, ce n'est pas?

Except that would mean taxying everywhere (or walking?), living either on the street or commuting from afar (which would be hard without the tube), and eating in dives.
