No chance the 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa. FIFA will likely award it to Australia.
South Africa has zero chance of meeting the neccessary demands of public safety, media accommodation, acceptable stadia, etc.
They have made no progress in these areas since being awarded the tournament, and the forecast ain't great.
Some politicians, including Howard, are having a big meeting today. On the agenda will be a bid for the 2018 WC, but it's just a stalking horse to show FIFA that they could in fact host it instead of SA.
The 2014 WC will go to South America, almost certianly Brazil.
Thinking well ahead to 2018, FIFA have desinated it a European based World Cup and England would be virtually unopposed if they decide to make a bid as Spain/Italy/France/Germany have all hosted it since England's last time in 1966.
I hope the world cup won’t be in Australia, it definitely won’t feel like a world cup with the match timings.
Who ever wins the world cup in 2038 gets to keep the cup!!
They won’t give you the cup after wining it 3 times now, what there doing is once they run out of space for the engraving of the team name they’ll hand it to the last winner.
Sorry, but I thought it was already official that South Africa definetly have it in 2010? Can FIFA change their minds like that?
I suppose looking at South Africa now there are a lot of problems still there. But like zeds says a lot of people were really sceptical about Greece ever hosting The Olympics and they managed it - what a load of rubbish the Olympics is though btw - I have to read quite a lot of stuff about how good it is for regeneration of poor places... for a month whilst it's on, then the poorest people in the some of the poorest wards in the UK (London way) are left with a Velodrome and a Olympic Size swimming pool - cheers for that, it'll come in well handy. By the way any of those billions you've spent on the whole smegging thing going free to invest in making sure kids don't have to grow up in cold damp tower blocks? That they get a decent education? That massive roads aren't constructed through the poorest estates so some Ilingtonites can go and watch javelin one sunday... sorry!
I knew this guy a few years ago who was South African he now lives in Scotland. The horror stories he told me were unreal.Telling me about armed gangs hitting shopping malls and having shootouts with the security guards. The guy himself was kidnapped for ransom. It'd make me think twice about going.

Colombia was due to host the 1986 World Cup but, due to the economy and lack of progress, it was moved to Mexico so there is "previous".
Oh don't say that Paul Robinson has only just got back to Erinsborough, what a time honestly, kidnapped by some dodgy Mexians and forced to play in a World Cup and he scored an own goal - although some how the blind officals said it was Crespo's
Hopefully england will bid for the world cup in 2018 as it deserves it so bad as it has already in place some of the best stadia in the world and not just in the big cities, and also has one of the best leagues in the world. I am surprised it hasn't applied sooner. And i know even though wembley is heavily delayed it will still be a flagship for football in england as it is an immense and impressive football stadium!

Oh terrific;not only will the welsh, scots and irish have to put up with the traditional OTT world cup media overkill but we'll have to actually pay for a tournament we might not even be allowed to participate in.England got the automatic place in 1966 along with all the refereeing decisions that go with being hosts, the automatic place if its held in the UK again should be given to one of the other taxpaying home nations.
Mikey, if you thought the 1994 tournament boring, you must have been watching it with your eyes shut. There were loads of fantastic games, with the advantage switching from one side to another, and lots of great attacking football. Romania, Nigeria, Bulgaria, Sweden (until the semi) were consistently entertaining, Baggio was fantastic. Romania v Argentina was a classic. All the quarter finals were better than any game in the 2006 World Cup and most of the last 16 games were very entertaining too. What more do you want in a World Cup? Okay, the final was poor, the competition overall was comfortbaly the best I've seen.

I agree with you. I'm surprised by people saying USA 94 was boring. It was, to me, the best WC since '82. Only Mexico 86 can compare. And yes, Arg-Romania was a classic. What about Colombia-Romania?
Columbia v Romania was a thing of great beauty sms, made all the better for kicking off at the ideal time for World Cups. I.e. Late at night European time. It would be great if the 2010 World Cup was in USA or Mexico.
1982 was very good yes, mainly for Brazil and France v Germany, but the format was ridiculous and both Germany's and Poland's second phase groups were tedious affairs.
