I cannot see why all these people are slating all the english fans for carrying the flags in there cars. I am english and living in ireland and all the irish I have spoke to have said they would be doing the sme thing if ireland had of made it. its a time to suport your country I think it is grest to have a flag out of car the higher the prouder the better

I know! What is he doing?!!! I think he just did it to wind up George but then again George did hide Humphrey's tuba, he thinks he's so smart and then what about that time he tried to swallow that pineapple whole??! He's just showing off, he's bringing the whole group down with his antics
Living in sunny/rainy Wales, I don't see all that many flags hanging off the cars. You see the odd one now and then but thankfully not tonnes. I'm going home this weekend though, so I expect they'll be bl00dy everywhere!
While I don't feel the need to wave a flag on my car, I don't mind people displaying the one. But the morons that feel the need to display 2 or even more I have to fight the urge to slash their tyres or act in any other anti-social way towards their vehicle.
To those of us with wider life experience, flying flags on cars, excesssive patriotism occurs in other countries too....not just England.
To me, complaining about flags or excessive support of a national side in the WC is not indicative of conditions in that country; rather, it's indicative of the life experience of the observer. How many other countries have you visited during the WC? If it's more than zero, I shall have a debate with you. Else, shut up, and get a life.
Good post Spinoza. I was in Germany for the first week of the WC, tonnes of German cars with flags on, houses with German flags flying from windows. I assume this is for the WC, not just some Nationalistic thing.

I don't really understand what point you're trying to make at all here? You have to have to be Phileas Fogg to be able to pass comment about anything in your country? Who said anything about how it was indicative about conditions in a country? I think it's all a bit more simple than that to be honest with you - I reckon a lot of people just think it's just tacky and sad (whether you agree or not) then you've probably got a load of people who think it's jingoistic or something.
I'm sure there are tonnes of flags about in Germany, Italy, France or whereever but are you suggesting that there's not one soul in their whole population who feels the same way about flags everywhere as loads of people here evidently do?
I've been to America loads, and the flags flying at almost every household in any leafy suburb is just as annoying to me as any on a Nova in this country.
We should respect Mr Bryson's opinions though, being as he's so travel savvy.
