I think for Bologna it's more of a case that they went down in a play-off as a result of Fiorentina just getting enough points to get out of trouble. If Fiorentina managed that through ill means, I'd have to go along with Bologna and agree they should be promoted - if it relates to two seasons, why should the benefactors not being in Serie B anymore be the relegated teams just from last season?

As a Juventus fan, will our tickets be any cheaper this year?

It would seem both fair and logical that Bologna, having been disadvantaged by the goings-on, be compensated by a return to Serie A.

As for Lens, I seem to have missed that bit - but assume they've demanded a place in Europe? As you say, it's none of their business. Dropping an Italian club in favour of a French one would take some fairly high level action by UEFA, which is only marginally more likely than the Pope announcing his engagment to Kylie Minogue in the next 48 hours...

I spotted the story on the FI site, Dave, but it's the only place I've seen it.

The rules state that teams replacing other teams in European competition must come from the same country, so as you say, it's highly unlikely that UEFA would sanction Lens taking Palermo's place in the qualifiers.

I wonder if it doesnt feel a tad embarassing for fans of the clubs concerned...theres not a great deal of dignity in it, after all... Red Face

I see what youre saying.I personally think that none of this seasons bottom 3 serie A teams should get to stay up as they were all so bad and ,in Lecce and Trevisos case, detached so early on.These teams were heading down no matter what shenanigans occured elsewhere.
In the case of the teams relegated in 04/05,however,all but Atalanta went right to the wire and the margins of staying up/going down were slim and that is why i think these teams should at least be considered to be reinstated to serie A.I think im correct in saying, for example, that in Bolognas case there was a highly contentious home game vs Juve where they had key players suspended and there were some very questionable decisions in Juves favour.Brescia,on the other hand, had a relegation last game decider away to one of the other guilty parties,Fiorentina(although Brescia simply never seemed to turn up on the day)
What is pitiful is Milan attempting to take the UEFA place from Empoli, pathetic.Compared to the other 3 they got of lightly, why dont they just thank their lucky stars and take their punishment like men.
Id like to point out that i am not a Bologna or Brescia fan.

I am and I'd like to say that I would rather win promotion than be given it - but if given it I'll take it !!!!!

We also had an very dubious home tie with Juve that year - but as you rightly point out forthe final game of the season vs Fiorentina the team went AWOL

Lens are clutching at straws and UEFA should really have a word with them about keeping out of what doesnt concern them;they bemoan the fact that teams so far down the italian final standings are now in europe as a result of the scandal when onlhy the top 4 in france get into europe;this,of course, could be down to french teams shocking record in europe, bettered even by my native Scotland.
And lets face it-if the top couple of french teams were stripped of european qualification lens would be snapping off the hand that offered them it instead.

Juventus had to be punished more severely than the other clubs involved, but that Milan were treated so leniently does mean they were bound to feel particularly aggrieved.

The most disturbing punishments have been those given to individuals, which are extremely lenient and do not seem fair.

It is also hard to believe that in this whole corrupt messy system, there were only 4 clubs guilty of anything.

There's a second investigation going on which will have its' own trial, they are investigating 5 more clubs that finished lower down Serie A. The first investigation was just to sort out which clubs to put in europe before the July 26th deadline.

Just clocked this on the BBC site.

Most interesting part of the article is:

"At the same time as the appeals are heard, prosecutor Stefano Palazzi will press for even harsher punishments.

Palazzi wants Juventus relegated to Serie C, and AC Milan demoted to Serie B with Fiorentina and Lazio, with stiffer points reductions."

I hadn't realised there was scope for the situation to worse...

Well... if you look at the punishments, Fiorentina and Lazio got the worst in regards to Palazzi's recommendations. Palazzi asked for Juve to C, Viola in B -12pts, Lazio in B -6/7 pts and Milan to B -3pts. Juve and Milan got lighter sentences and Lazio and Fiorentina got heavier sentences... HTF? No political clout... my arse.

Everyone's got it right in the arse in Italy. I've got to say, it's beautiful!

Serie A will be dull for the next couple of seasons mind you, so no real changes there.

For 13 years? When did Inter last win the league?

I agree in a way, personally I'd like it if Moggi was locked in a sewer for the rest of his life but I think if you're going to start handing out the toughest punishments to individuals then you're getting away from the fact match fixing and general dodgy business is a collective effort.

I really don't believe Moggi and the rest were out on their own with lone gunmen type actions - people at the clubs (the hierarchy) knew what they were up to and at best they'll have turned a blind eye at worst they'll have encouraged it.

It's the same with players - when it was all discovered I very quickly got sick as a parrot of hearing endless players in Serie A coming out saying "it's terrible, something needs to be done, this can't go on", pretending they're upset and surprised - yeah, something needs to be done! You lot need to grass up when you know stuff. I know that's a bit of a tricky area as they risk being shunned from the calcio world then but what I'm saying is don't come out with surprised morally upright statements when, I believe, most of them knew it went on every two minutes.

1989.

There is a good chance that in the 01/02 season 'tampering' prevented us from gaining the the 3 points needed to obtain the title.

You could also query the 97/98 and 02/03 campaigns.

Mai stati in B.

Wasnt it 2000/2001 or 2001/2002 when Inter threw it away on the last day losing to a Poborsky inspired Lazio and gifting the title to Juve in the first season of Lippi's return? [sorry for that long sentence - poor grammar Roll Eyes] I dont remember Inter's results for the season, but that wasnt due to dodgy dealings. Inter just plain blew it!

I still think the verdict is due this evening though, Curva.

The original deadline for European registration was 12:00pm CET today, so I assume it will now be 12:00pm CET tomorrow so that the verdict can be given this evening and the clubs can register tomorrow morning.

I realise the verdict is still coming tonight, but I thought the extension of the deadline, and the fact that the Italian FA requested it, was significant.
