Must say, I've got a weakness for buying European footie shirts. There's a certain satisfaction in wearing an obscure shirt that makes complete strangers ask "What team's that mate?"

Current favourites are Rayo Vallecano 2001/2, Palermo 2004/05 and Tenerife 2000/01. Next purchase could be the Deportiva Wanka home shirt on subside with "WANKA" replacing the sponsor logo.

I know what you mean.
It was most amusing when I wore the Florentia Viola shirt, from when we were in Serie C2. Now, people with a reasonable knowledge of European football can usually work out my Fiorentina shirts - purple, oooh, that must be Fiorentina. But white, with a purple stripe, and a badge that looked like the Cub Scouts' logo, they were clueless!

Bleurgh, reminds me of the Dortmund shirt. At least it'll keep the kids safer during the dark winter.

It's just that I can think of so many more flattering garments available for 45 to 50 quid......

Fair enough if you just slob about in them now and then, but I think wearing them out regularly is one down from being a chav. Sorry if that offends anybody.

Hey, if you got style then you can carry off almost anything. If you don't, it doesn't matter what you wear.

I know what you mean, but isn't it annoying when you do see chavs wearing Inter shirts (or whatever club you support), who clearly have no passion whatsoever for the club? Saying that though, I would love to have this. Stuff of legends.

I believe the game in which a team borrowed a local side's green and white striped kit was Italy-France in 1978. Ended 1-0 to Italy

You're quite right, interjambo. I tracked the details down, but didn't get round to posting. Both sides turned up with identical kit. The French were the 'away' team, so ended up with the borrowed kit.

I'd like to see a link to that on the Net. Couldn't find one anywhere. Eventually agreed on the answer following a brainstorming exchange of e mails with a couple of expert friends

False memory for me.

I was thinking about the France v Kuwait game in 1982 that was subject to controversy for another reason. Any answers on this one? (Not you Jambo, too easy for you)

Had a wee fish about on Google and turned a few photos up which would negate the France Italy idea. France Italy '78

Didn't the French team throw the game in exchange for Kuwait buying nuclear weapons?

Seriously, wasn't that the phantom whistle from the crowd match? Kuwait stopped playing, France scored, Crown Prince someone or other stormed onto the pitch, ordered Kuwait off, lots of fuss. I can't remember if the goal stood or not. The French also, IIRC, had three or four goals disallowed.

I don't think there's a link for the France v Italy game per se - tracked down a reference in the Grauniad to the French playing in borrowed shirts, and the other details are carried over from what I remember of seeing the game.

IB - mmmm, interesting. Could have sworn that it was the French.

That said, the kit the 'French' (or whoever it was) wore was white with very thin green vertical stripes - which might not show up in that photo?

Ah-ha! Quick google to see if I was right about the French game with Kuwait in 82, and what do I find....?

quote:
France beat Hungary 3-1, but only after the referee had threatened to make them forfeit the match for not wearing the correct kit. The police fetched the kit of the local second division side and, wearing it, France won 3-1.
from here

Photos - here - fetching number, wasn't it. Stripes thicker than I remember (but I was only six)

So it *was* the French, but the Grauniad fouled up. Factual inaccuracy in the Grauniad? Shurely shome mishtake?

I bought an 1860 Munich shirt the other day. From the 97 season or there abouts. Very uncomfy but good for the novelty factor. The sponser is Lowenbrau. German beer!

Forca Barca! Campions 05/06, Campions D'Europa!

Played, Dave but I swear that photo link wasn't there when I first trawled the site. Selective blindness. Now, any more WC '78 or 82 trivia that I may confuse? I could have sworn that I dreamt that Northern Ireland actually beat the host nation once and that a bruiser called Billy Hamilton scored many goals. Must cut down on my e-numbers.

So my initial memory of France-Hungary was right though I thought it was the Hungarians who had to wear the green and white.

Also, are we sure it was Kuwait-France that had the phantom whistle in the crowd and not Kuwait-Czechoslovakia?

Just another vague memory...
