With my second child due to be born in January I'm going to take the opportunity to go to the Rome derby at the end of of October. I'll be flying into Rome on the day of the game and spending two to three days in the eternal city. So far my flights and match tickets are sorted, just need to find myself a decent hotel and organise myself around the game.
If anybody can spare a moment to share with me their experiences and/or offer some do's/don'ts it would be very much appreciated.
Anything from getting from the city centre to the Stadio Olimpico, what (if any) colours to wear (I'm a Roma supporter), where to eat...anything at all. I'm going all on my lonesome so would appreciate anything that helps make the trip and safe and enjoyable one!
Do you know where you will be sitting? How did you get your ticket. If you tell me where you are sitting i will let you know whether you will be with the Roma or Lazio fans.
You can get to the stadium by taking the Metro Line A to Flaminio and then taking the no 2 tram to the end of the line and then follow the crowd. Not sure about buses as I drive. good area for eating in Rome is Trastevere. You will find lots of restaurants there.
I'm sitting in the 'Monte Mario' and purchased the tickets via www.romalazio.co.uk - At this stage I'm looking at staying in the Hotel Russie. Apparentlty there's a tram which runs straight to the Stadio from 'Piazza Flaminio' just a short walk from the hotel.
At the moment, I wondering what's the best mode of transport to get to/from the airport/city centre and if the trams run after the game (Wednesday evening game) and of course if it's advisable to sport Roma colours!!
The game wont definitely be held in the evening.. just as a warning. If there are problems when we play napoli (which is extremely likely) at the next home game it will be played during daylight or without fans. If you are in Monte Mario you could either be sitting with Roma or Lazio fans.. be careful. Monte Mario is mixed so mybe safest not to wear either colour.
If you are flying to Fiumicino, take the train direct from the airport to Termini (the main bus/ train terminal) or from ciampino take the shuttle bus (you can buy tickets on the plane i think) which also takes you to termini.
I was fearful (and warned) that the game maybe moved. I've yet to finalise my flights and it sounds like it may be best to wait a while.
Is it a case of the Italian FA waiting to see what happens at the Napoli game before a decision is made upon scheduling? I know that there has been a degree of questioning about having such a big game mid-week.
Thanks again for the information, it's a great help and just may mean I don't make a journey for nothing!
Dieci, If you are around on thursday check out the Cisco Roma game at the Rugby stadium (Sorry Forgot the name). Di Canio plays for them so you could always watch that. I hope the derby game isn't switched as its a great atmosphere. I can see trouble at the Napoli game though.
