You might get some work done now, Chuckie Wink. Did you meet up with any 'special' friends when you went over for the Roma game?

Well, done all my work for the week in the first day and a half. Anyone out there?

Who's been to the far-east, then? I keep getting recommendations but can't fit it all in. Going there for 3 weeks and fancy Saigon, BKK, Samui, Angkor and Phnom Penh. Mezz - you said you lived there once. Doing what?

Wha-hey! Big Grin

Actually, you're probably closer than you may have thought Wink Eek

My Dad worked for TOTAL Oil, and they had a drilling field off the southern coast of Thailand. He used to be out there for a month then back home for a month, always stopping over in Bangkok, and seeing as in the summer of 1996 I had just finished college and was doing nothing with my life, he suggested I go over with him and waste my days in the sunshine.

His company paid for my 4 star hotel (including room service, laundry, all meals & drinks), and I spent all day and night in Soi Cowboy, a long street one minute away from my hotel with 50 go-go bars on it and nothing else.

I occasionally ventured to Nana Plaza, a multi-level 'shopping centre' style construction with around 80 go-go bars, and Pat Pong, a 'mini-town' style area with over 400 go-go bars and home of the infamous 'No Hands' bars.

All in all, it was a rather enlightening half-year Cool

Sounds excellent. I'll be landing in BKK and spending a couple or 3 days there, seeing the "sights" and recovering from jetlag before moving on.

How much is a beer?

Couldn't say for sure just now, as there's been a stock market crash or two in the 9 years since I was last there, but it'll be cheap.

The local brew is Singha, but you should splash out that few extra pence and stick to Singha Gold.

It's 9%, but it's smooth as a lady-boy's bum cheek...

9%? That'll kill me. I can take as many 5-5.5% beers as you can give me, but that stuff sounds like the Special Brew of South East Asia!

If people really get bored at work they should become teachers. Whatever else there is to condemn this job it certainly is not boring.

I think normal Singha's about 7%, if I remember correctly. There's this other lager called 'Kloster' (it's made by the same brewery, but they've gave it a 'European sounding' name) that's a more palatable 5%.

If you're drinking in a more down market place (any of the places I mentioned before), don't be surprised if you're offered a 'condom' with your beer. You wont be expected to perform an insertion-related trick (again, see any of the places I mentioned before), they're only enquiring if you want one of those styrofoam cooler thingys for your bottle.

The Grand Palace in Central Bangkok is a must-see, where the Emerald Buddha lives, and I would recommend a trip up north to see the River Kwai and it's famous bridge.

Words to the wise:

Don't assume a lot of Thais speak English: they don't.
Don't spit in the street.
Don't show the soles of your feet to anyone.
Don't touch anyone on their head.
Don't walk over roads. The drivers will go over you rather than around you, so run like fook.
Don't insult the King in any way, shape or form.
Don't be scared to ride in a Tuk-Tuk, it's an absolute blast.
Don't talk/sing/shout over the national anthem. It's broadcast on TV at 6:00pm every day.
Don't eat in restaurants if there's more 'Ferangs' than Thais. The food will generally be písh.
Don't be afraid. Crime in Bangkok is remarkably low despite its reputation.

Do have a great time!

I live in Seoul, South Korea. Whilst it's a brilliant place to live and work, there are probably more interesting places to visit as a tourist. You probably weren't thinking of going there anyway, but.....

The only other place I've been to in't Far East is Singapore - a wonderful place to visit. I recommend it.

My cousin says Mayanmar is the best place on the face of the Earth and I don't half fancy Cambodia and Malaysia.

Unless you happen to be one of the locals, in which case the risk of being jailed & tortured by the military junta is fairly high... There is a campaign by Amnesty (or someone similar) urging a tourist boycott of the country until there's a regime change (George Dubya sends his regrets...).

The military has driven tens of thousands of ethnic minority people from their land, forced them into labour or required them to grow crops for the army instead of growing their own food. Soldiers then take the harvested crops for themselves, leaving little food for civilians. Other civilians have been required to carry rice or other supplies for soldiers, who sometimes beat or even kill those who cannot keep up with the work.
