Jealous? No, i feel sorry for Steve Gibson who's pumped all that cash into the club and still finds that he's the only guy in Middlesbrough who wants to watch football! No-one ever goes...but i was watching 'the Premiership years' over Xmas and there was plenty of footage of a relegation-fodder boro side playing to a full house in the late 90s. Do the smog-monsters only want to see an unsuccessful side?

I really enjoyed it considering the pitch and weather. Boro just deserved to win and Jimmy used all his experience to win the penalty. I do think you needed more than one goal though.
Looking forward to next week. A different Roma midfield will play and we'll get an early goal to set up a great match.
Are you going?

Bit like Bolton, I don't dislike them and their ruffian ways, but their attendances are pi55 poor, I watched the game against Marseille and it looked like the crowd thought it was Lincoln in the League Cup. One day in the cycle of football, they'll be relegated and the fans will whinge about the good old days...when they weren't even there to watch them. Premiership fans get on my t*ts sometimes, they complain too much, not that I do this much now, but try standing on an open terrace getting hypothermia watching two teams of cloggers kick 5hit out of each every week. One nice piece of football penciled in once a month for five minutes...to get a consolation goal in a 5-1 drubbing.
shoes! shoes! don't you talk to me about shoes, in ma day we were lucky if we 'ad feet, father would go out loooking for a rabbit, what would he come back with for all 28 of us? a lump o coal and it had to last us all weekend, mah word
Boro's attendances are very good. They average 28k, which is excellent for a small town with a population of about 150k. There is lots of local competition, too, with big clubs nearby in Newcastle, Sunderland and Leeds.
I don't mind the way they play, either. McClaren is sensible and pragmatic, if a little boring.
What I think is criminal about Boro is the transfer fees they have shelled out for players at the end of their careers. The amount McClaren spent on Viduka and Hasselbaink is barmy. There are lots of other oldies he's paid over the odds for, too. One day Boro are going to wake up and find their squad is past it and there's no more money left for young blood.
Mind you, Boro's transfers are their business, and unfortunately, given the fact that we don't have a single striker fit, they are almost certain to put us out of the UEFA Cup on Wednesday.

Our transfer fee's aren't outragous, most of our transfers in the last 3 years have been free transfers, Hasselbaink was free and he is has been terriffic, and Yakubu is a bargain at 7 million. Do you really think we will knock Roma out?

Our crowds are not bad at all when you consider we didnt even used to fill our old ground, crowds in general are down and it is because of tv and ticket prices increasing every year we are a small town and the poorest region in the whole country so getting 25,000 for a cup game is good going and our average crowd is 30,000 which is not bad at all, Im going to Rome tommorow should be great whatever the result.
I totally understand where mikey's coming from. His club gets an enormous attendance and for that, they've had eight 'proper' trophies in 114 years. Newcastle have consistently had the second-highest attendance record in England. Not bad, especially considering the best-attended (Manchester United) claim to have a fanbase of 75m.
I too come from the school that suggests a club should be judged by its fans. If football's glittering prizes were doled out on that basis Newcastle would be very successful (and Celtic moreso ).
It seems that mikey's on the right track when you consider that Boro have an average gate that's little more than half Newcastle's. Moreover, Boro's games always look like they are played in a near-empty stadium, because the average attendance is only 81.1% of capacity (Newcastle's is 99.4%).
However, one must be mindful of the Grauniad's imperious Knowledge column. The article entitled "Are Boro the best-supported, least-successful side ever?" (April 3, 2003) proves that premise very convincingly.
In short, the 28450 hardy Riverside regulars are not s*it fans, but terribly unfortunate dedicated supporters.
I don't think you can say set of fans are better than anyone elses, every club has a core of fans that are there no matter what. Newcastle did not get sell outs for their european games, our crowd against Roma was 25000 in a 35000 capacity stadium that isnt half its more than 3/4 full. Nobody can criticise our support.

Thats a wonderful post and i wish i had a reply to do it justice.
It isn't eloquent but: the Boro would have more fans if the football was more entertaining. When it comes down to it, its expensive to watch a boring team but value for money to watch an entertaining one. Maybe thats why Captain Lager attracted larger crowds...no-one ever knew what was going to happen next

Just a minor point but 25,000 isn't more than 3/4 of 35,000, it's about 70% I think, nearer to 2/3 full.
Newcastle don't sell out in early rounds of European competitions, but if they were playing Roma or Marseille St. James' Park would have been very near to capacity.
It's called Sex Panther, by Odeon. It's illegal in 9 other countries. It's made with pieces of real panther, so you know it's good. They've done studies you know - 60% of the time, it works every time!
