Is there no betting this week then? I would hate to think I've missed another chance to spunk a virtual tenner (maybe my last!)...

It seems a couple of members are running the risk of 'bankruptcy' - might be an idea to introduce some kind of 'loan' system - anyone have any thoughts on the idea ?....

That's bad luck again Giovanni. You know you only lose a fiver if you don't submit an entry?

If a loan facility is in the offing I might be interested, but we need to discuss terms.

Alarmingly enough, I've actually started betting for real, albeit very low stakes. I opened a Eurobet online account with the obligatory £5, and now have a proud balance of £12.60 after making 5 bets and winning 3 of them. I put £1 on a United + Fiorentina double, £1 on a horse called Cadogan and £6.50 on Spurs to beat West Brom. Bets lost were £1 on a horse called Roman Ark, and 97p on Reggina last night.

It looks like Sir George's low-risk method is indeed a good one. I'll still be blasting my last virtual tenner away this weekend, mind...

I think anybody who runs out of cash should be out of the game, but it's really up to the chap who does the marking to decide this I think.

There might be some merit in a loan system at very high interest rates and then virtual debt collectors coming in and leaning on (then duffing up) the miscreants when they fail to win and pay off their debts.

Mezz, use betting exchanges (e.g. betdaq.com). Almost always better odds. Use oddschecker.com for the best price on any event and *NEVER* do doubles. You'll lose money faster than you do on this game if you continue putting doubles on with Eurobet.

And the idea of this game was partly to show people that nearly everybody loses, not to encourage people to open accounts with bookies!

I know, I'm one of the last people who should be opening an account with a bookie!

I only really opened it so I could have the occasional flutter on things like the Grand National and World Cup, and I decided to punt the fiver that I was forced to use to open the thing.

I'm interested in why you think I should never do doubles, particularly with the likes of Eurobet?

Oh, and cheers for the exchange site addresses too...

Well Eurobet set their odds to make 10% profit on each market. I.e. If even amounts are staked on each outcome, they'll make 10% of the total amount staked. So you're getting 90% of what a fair bet would be. E.g. if it was heads or tails they'd offer 5/6 on heads and 5/6 on tails. Doubles effectively multiply their profit margin.

So if you do a double of 2 heads in succession of 2 flips of a coin, your odds would be 5/6 x 5/6, which (in decimals) is 0.21. This is 82% of what a "fair" bet would be (0.25). I.e. A profit margin for the bookie of 18%. That is why the bookies are forever encouraging doubles in their adverts.

Re the bookie profit, with betting exchanges the commission is 3% and they are usually very close to "fair" markets. I.e. Look for the percantage at the top of the little betting box and only bet when it's less than 101% or so.

And aside from profit margins, it's very unlikely that the same bookie will offer the best odds on 2 separate events. A silly popular bet at the moment is Chelsea for the quadruple. If you go to betdaq and find Chelsea's odds for each competition, multiply them together and compare with the best bookie quadruple bet on offer, you'll see that it's a massive rip off. But punters with a thin grasp of probability (and assuming some things are "certain" when they're not) can easily persuade themselves that it's a good bet.

Ah, gotcha... as I said, I only opened the account so I could bet very infrequently on the bigger events.

One thing I was considering was sticking a quid on all 10 Serie A games. For last weekends games, my predictions would have won me £1007.33 for my £1 had they all come through (not the same predictions I posted on here!). I decided not to bet this time and just write down who I would have backed.

Turned out I got 9 out of 10 after Sampdoria lost at Livorno.

It may be misguided, but I reckon I could nail all 10 in a week before I spent £1000. Is this what you mean by 'a thin grasp of probability'?
