I'm obviously in no position to tell you how to maximise your chances of winning this game, but I'll do so anyway, since you ask.

The bookies margin for the prices quoted was 10% on every game. So the more you bet, the lower the "expected value" of your pot at the end of the season. You should lose £1 a week in fact. So to give yourself the best chance of winning you need to bet the lowest possible amount until the end of the season. Then towards the end of the season, you see how much you need to bet in order to win the game. With so many competitors, it's inevitable one or two will be in profit. I needed a 7/1 shot to come off, which obviously it didn't. But it's better than the 20 to 1 you theoretically start with (given 21ish competitors).

The alternative strategy of betting a tenner a go may leave you in the lead with 3 weeks to go, but you are far more likely to find yourself either near the bottom or without any money at all.

So the way to improve this game would be to post "fair" prices. I.e. Adding 10% to the winnings of each bet, but that's not going to happen as it's complicated enough as it is!
