Yes Mezz, why not raise the funds to 1000 per person and say the minimum stake is 100 per week? Errr...oh dear.

No wonder United fans are still giving Glazer the benefit of the doubt...

Because I suggested an increase in the minimum/maximum stake limits? I didn't realise I had such influence...

Had Malcolm Glazer not bought Manchester United, I wonder what a cantankerous, whinging old fart such as yourself would have found to bang on about this summer?

Sorry, I should have made myself clearer...I was having a gratuitious dig at your poor grasp of numbers. The idea being that a chap with basic numeracy would understand what Glazer has actually done to United and wouldn't be waiting for the inevitable. Wink

Re the game, I meant that if you raise the minimum stake, the maximum stake and the pot you start with, you are not actually altering the game one jot. You would just be putting zeros on the end of each number...A bit like Glazer will be doing with his merchandise.

And to be fair to me, I've had plenty to bang on and whinge about this summer without having to resort to boring myself and others about Glazer. It's just that you and Glazer will always be inextricably linked in my mind because your reaction was that of the quintessential football fan. From "United Not For Sale" and a a member of Shareholders Utd to "Let's wait and see what Glazer does, it's all media gossip" within 5 minutes of the deal becoming news.

Going back to Juventino's original post, I thought the rules last year worked well and were understood by everyone. I would only suggest we raise the original pot, perhaps to 150.00? Other than that, keep it as it was.

And sign me up for the new season. I'll be happy to mark, post odds or do whatever needs doing from time to time.

United We Stand, Manchester United's most vocal fanzine and active member of Shareholder's United & the 'NOT FOR $AL£' coalition, on the crowd at Everton:

"They were here to fight for the club they loved by supporting it through thick and thin. This is thin. Thin like through Louis Edwards, Martin Edwards and the PLC. Thick was the blood, however, that flowed through their veins, and was their MUFC birthright. That magnificent team in red who plays on the pitch.

That aside, this is the time to move on and support United the football team, for we have players who are truly worth our magnificent longstanding support."

I'm happy to let you go on thinking whatever it is you want about me, George. At least I've nailed my colours to the mast, I don't even know if you follow any specific team.

I believe the technical term for someone like you is a 'floater'. Seems strangely accurate.

By the way, I still haven't sold...

I think 150 pounds/points is closer to the mark - 100 to cover the length of the season would result in George being crowned the winner come June.

To recap, the rules are as follows:

1. You must bet on a result each week of Serie A fixtures

2. You have to place a wager within the range of 1-10 'Points' on one result - No accumulators

3. There will be a deadline that will be enforced this time round - no late bets

4. The results will be calculated by the odds posted on the weekly thread - I'll probably use last seasons site, but there may be a change.

5. I'll continue doing the marking, with the exception of a few weeks in April (like this year)

6. No 'automated' bets ie. 'Put a tenner on Juventus every week until i say otherwise' - You have to post your selections week in, week out - even if they are for the same team

7. If i;m late in posting the odds, feel free to start a thread and post what you'd like to bet on

Thats about it, can't think of anything else for the moment

Didn't we fine players if they didn't place a bet? I think 5 points would be sufficient.

Thanks for that Mezz. It brought a tear to my eye. You'll not find me laughing at folk for hero-worshipping the Rios, Ruuds and Rooneys of this world. I never was one for tragicomedy.

Likesay, I'll not be taking part this year, but one thing that would actually improve the game is giving a 10% bonus to each winner. That would remove the bookies profit margin from the prices (making them "fair") and make it worthwhile betting more than £1 a go. Probably too much of a pain for the marker and since most punters wouldn't have the foggiest why you were doing it (no matter how many times you explained), it's probably far more trouble than it's worth.

If you should do that though, only add 10% to the winnings. Not winnings AND stake.

Why?

And why are you not playing this year? Are you scared of losing?

I live in permanent fear of having my bottom spanked but that's another issue.

It's a game with some merit, but not sufficient merit for me to spend hours (cumulatively) filling in the form every week. And my interest in Italian footy is pretty much non-existent these days. Old age I expect, but even La Liga and Lo Prem fail to excite much either. Maybe I should get into the SPL...

Shouldn't you have added the stakes back on as well?

Your bet was:

Mezz WIN Juventus HOME 10.00 @ 1.22 = 12.2

So you "won" 12.20. Add your 10.00 stake back, your score should have increased to 162.20, not 152.20, shouldn't it??

if the starting bank was 150:

1. take 10 for the bet = 140
2. stake is 10 + 2.20 profit = 12.20 + 140 = 152.20

I think thats right...

DelPiero is right, Curva.

The 1.22 means that you "get back" £1.22 for every £1 you put on. That amount includes your stake. So you've "won" only £0.22 if you put £1 on.

So, for example, if the odds are 3.00, you get back £3.00 for every £1 on, (again, this includes your stake). This means that the odds are 2/1 expressed in fractional format - but expressed in decimal format, it's 3.00 - this is perhaps where the confusion arises...

Maybe I've confused you more, but I think the above makes sense...

Spot on Mike - It may be easier for some people to understand the odds expressed by fraction, rather than decimal.

It goes back to the point that George made - there is little value to be had on betting on the top three clubs - You'd be better adopting a strategy along the lines of Inter Bhoy's, small stakes on the unlikely result.
