No wonder you think you are up overall in your gambling. If 4 winning bets totalling $800 becomes "a grand", and then "maybe $900", it's not surprising you think you're covering your losses.
You might hate bookies and their clientele, but a drunken bloke staggering into one on a winter's afternoon is hardly going to stand out as a different, superior breed of punter...Time you got yourself a brown mac.

Hey Georgie boy, practice what you preach!
If one should always look for value rather than winners, why do you put £1 on odds-on home bankers each week like Juve v Atalanta?
|

|

I do practice what I preach, it's just that you haven't been paying attention. I take the least bad alternative on offer. There is never any actual value in the coupons as presented.

Typical how your [sic] now resorting to cheap shots. 'A grand' was a rhethorical figure - it was 900.00. It's become 'a grand' because one tends to round it up. I didn't actually say I won 800 in total - the total was 900 if you read it again. Doesn't really matter. You stick to you're [sic] piddling couple of quid from spotting "errors" and leave the serious stuff to others. Perhaps you can share with us how much you're [sic] betting exploits come to on a per annum basis (estimated) and we'll see how impressive it is? Quite honestly, if it's not 6 digits, I wouldn't get out of bed for it.
When in Rome, do the Romans.

Dear, dear. Two $100 wins plus a $200 win plus a £400 win is not $900, or a rounded up "grand". I'm not trying to "spot errors". You just keep talking gibberish. If you insist on trying to impress by describing the details of your gambling feats, what am I supposed to do? You said you won a grand, and it was closer to £550. Take off a few bob for the over-priced drinks and food on your casino "adventure" and a bit of rounding down to take account of the losses you tactically forget and we're probably looking at closer to £50. If that...
The point is you gamble pointlessly and self-destructively. If you are currently in the black (and I'd wager my gambling profit that you're not), you certainly won't be in the future. That's all. I know I can't stop you, but it's a bit of shame. So much potential...

Sir G - you don't half talk cr@p! I'd imagine if you go for value rather than winners, you've lost a hell of a lot more than you've won over the years.
The fact that you've won just 94p shows you're not the gambling guru you'd like us all to believe. These odds may not be brilliant, but we're all in the same boat.
Come and have a go if you think your (sic) hard enough.

I think George does know his stuff, to be honest. As far as I'm aware, he makes his money completely from arbitrages, and steers clear of simple bets like we're doing, which would explain why he's currently midtable. His general point is simply that bookies are always going to make a profit long-term, and therefore punters will always be in the red, if they gamble for long enough. However, I don't see how George's tactic of putting £1 on the favourite every week will work.

Pretty basic arithmetic Michael, but I'll explain it at the end of the year...when I'm bottom of the league.
I think I've been done so far by some Spinozaesque adding up.

George does do very well on his arbitrage. I've seen his new kitchen. Good argument by the way boys! Keep it up!

Am I the only one that thinks Roma's odds in the points game this week are a bit tight? 1.53 for a home win. I know Parma aren't any great shakes at the moment, but bloody hell, Roma look about as solid as Michael Jackson's legal defence right now... + FORZA LA VIOLA +
ACF FIORENTINA : FORZA LA VIOLA

Am I right in saying that you used to bet on the outcomes of matches George? (rather than just arbs). I still do occasionally, but even when I put more effort in I was only breaking even and it's not worth the hassle. I haven't put a real bet on since September. So in a strange way, this 'points' game may be saving me from eternal damnation. When I have a bit more money I'll open an account with an exchange or two.
Value can be found on some of the coupons in this points game.

Yes, I do dabble a little in ordinary betting and win tiny amounts and then only really due to "free bet" wins. It's just a game obviously, and I test out various theories (such as favourite-outsider bias, pro-England bias), with varying success. It is pretty much a waste of time although I did find my current "system" via such dabbling.
Eurobet offer odds as good as those offered by betting exchanges very, very rarely. There mark up is 10% on each of these markets. And even when a given Eurobet price is comparable with Betfair, there's still unlikely to be any "value" in the bet. I'd dismiss any bet that is within a total bookie market of over 104%. There's too much "fat" in such a market for any bookie "error" to be in the punter's favour.
I did put a few bob on South Africa to beat England in the cricket series at 15/8 yesterday. 99% market (a very small arb) and the price was an outlier. I.e. Most bookies had between 5/4 and 12/8. I think the best time to bet against England (at anything) is when they are doing very well. That is when the patriotic money piles on. I used to think it was always, but it's not the case. Home advantage, under-prepared Englanders, Come On You Boks!

WOW. I still have £65 left but can't get to a PC all the time to place my bets! I will try to this week, and hope that my PC situation changes in the New Year.

How ironinc is it that, after all the problems we had with this "betting" game earlier in the season, that C4 now have a betting exchange on their website? Two faced or what?

My bet - Messina v Atalanta - was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Do I get my £4 back?

I would imagine so.
