Introduction:

Having joined up to have a rant about a program (which appears to have disappeared) I read a few polls and discussions and would like to say a few words to research the reaction…

My Rant:

OH MY GOODNESS! What have we become; as a society the youth of today have become a self prophesising, self indulgent, self blameless independent body of whinging, crying, self centred, ignorant, lawless, jobless, drones of their own making yet still blame society and their predecessors for their own misdoings….

You blame religion, government, schools, media, family life and the neighbourhood you live in for the committals of your own lives…

My reasoning:
Are we not endowed with CONSCIENCE, REASON AND CHOICE?

Philosophy:
Based on the philosophies drawn up and bound by pure fact of life, we are who we are and not what society allegedly makes us…..

The constant requisite of is this ‘whom I should be in the face of my peers to be accepted as part of the society I live amongst’…

Do you the reader believe that you should comply with your peer’s demands to be accepted in life?

Do you the reader have a choice, a conscience based on pure reasoning?

Do you the reader know what you believe to be true?

How do you know this?

Comments graciously received:

I think this stems from your preconceived notions of male supremacy in an increasingly individualistic impersonal world.

That's always been the way of things as any anthropologist will tell you. There's probably a lot more freedom to be different today than ever before, but acceptance isn't an automatic right for those flouting societal norms.

What has this to do with the series anyway ? Are you saying people shouldn't strive to maximise their phyical appeal ? Why not ? Some of us haven't finished with life in the mainstream and don't want to look like derelicts.

That was a big rant there! But have you not thought that people just want to feel good about themselves.

Tell it to the judgemental people who stare at overweight people and feel that they can slag them off for no reason.

Yes we do have the freedom and ability to make our own personal choices and avoid being influenced by others. But most people ARE influenced by others. I don't see the problem with this: it doens't mean you are weak if you like to look similar to your peers, for instance.

I also think (and as you're posting on a forum devoted to discussing looks, fashion etc, I'll go on that line) that a desire to look good doesn't necessarily come from those around us. There is a certain sense of fitting in and competing, yes: but I think many like to look good for themselves. I personally don't care what others think of me: I dress how I please, in a way that pleases me. I pamper myself because it makes me feel good, not because I think others will see me as more attractive

To answer your questions that I feel relevant to this forum directly:

No I don't. As I said I do things to please myself, not others. And I don't believe my friends or the people I associate with are so fickle as to only accept me if I comply with their demands

Yes I do have a choice, hence why I don't blindly follow others. I make choices for myself, and I believe I do base many of those choices on reasoning. I would say however that it is unreasonable to suggest we can base all choices on reason alone. Other factors will come into play, and likewise we do also sometimes have to make choices not just for ourselves: we have to ask 'how will this course of actions affect others?' So you have different types of choices and reasoning perhaps. If I'm deciding on an outfit to wear to my partners work do, I will ultimately wear something that pleases me and makes ME feel good: but secondary to that I will consider his feelings. For example whilst I might not care about how I look in ripped jeans and a T-shirt, my partner most probably will. So I must consider how my choice might affect him and balance the two out
