So why are the streams now in some DRM mangled Windows Media Player format so that people who don't use Microsoft Windows as their operating system can't watch them? The first two episodes weren't crippled, why the change?
Why aren't the streams in a format watchable using free software on any platform? Surely C4s tech people aren't so naive that they think adding DRM will stop the streams being dumped and ending up on P2P? It hasn't. Episode 3 is out there despite the DRM. All the DRM does is annoy people and give you bad PR. It's not like the stream is of a high enough quality to harm potential DVD sales.

Its nothing to do with copying it, Channel 4 cannot legally show it outside the UK. the DRM is so they can limit it to only people within the UK (alas, why the first 2 had no limits, becuase C4 was still in discussion about the whole outside UK thing).

Hope i could help.

The Internet does not respect International borders. Cliche maybe, but true. Any attempt to limit online access to something like this to within a particular geographical boundry is doomed to fail. They could have done IP address sniffing insead of WMV DRM. It wouldn't have worked either but at least it wouldn't have pissed off people in the UK.

This Linux user can't. Could play the first two using mplayer and xine. Maybe I need to find the magic dlls or something. Easier to just get a DRM stripped version off P2P.

Neither can this one. I get the same using Kaffeine, which doesn't try to accquire a licence or anything, just plays a garbled mess.
I was forced to find a torrent of episode 3.

cheers channel 4 . I'm a UK resident but because I don't use microsoft rubbish I can't watch it?!. Oh well better watch out on P2P so that I can watch it.

If anyone from channel 4 is reading this then why don't you come out and tell us the point of the DRM? As you can see in messages above Ep3 is already decrypted and available on P2P so was it worth the effort of running such an insecure DRM on the file? Seems like a waste of money to me Smile

Channel4 have been about as much help as a chocolate teapot when I've tried to discuss them with them via email. So I've written to Broadcast, the trade magazine, about this. I'm so utterly fed up of broadcasters treating their viewers like this that something needs to be done.

Episodes 1 and 2 were easily playable under OS X - but when they started using DRM on epsiodes three onwards that's when things started to get nasty. So either they've back-peddling or it was a deliberate attempt to push the show with epsiodes 1 and 2 by making it so easily playable .

I work in the post-production industry and even I think it's downright silly. Either pick a DRM system that's cross-platform or don't bother.

I don't particularly want to go into circumventing DRM protection - but the easiest way is to wait for the thing to be broadcast on television and use either a DVD recorder or a digital tuner connected to the computer to capture the thing and then encode it.

If broadcasters want to moan about the lack of protection on their programs - they should take it up directly with the makers of VHS recorders, DVD recorders, digital TV tuners for computers and everything else.

Nobody should be penalized merely because of the type of computer or operating system they run.
