While I wholeheartedly respect Miss Winterhearted's review, I was first attracted to Rock School for a different reason.
Last year Channel 4 screened an excellent four-part documentary called the unteachables. It showed that if enough resources, committment and dedication is given to even those who have been written-off as unteachable. They can be turned around and make considerable progress. Well, I saw a parallel with that program. You may recall that Kirkley was first shown in a very bad light, compared with Christs Hospital School, almost giving the impression that it was a failing school. I was interested to see if once again students could make a huge improvement, when given the attention, time resources, etc. However, I came to realise that Kirley wasn't half as bad as it was portrayed, and that the students were far, far from being like those unteachables.
Even so, due to the short timescale, Gene was pushed almost to breaking point, and was feling the pressure. However, the students did make excellent progress on several levels, not just musically. Which afirms my original point about improved progress can be derived from extra attention and resources.
Before I am slated here for my original opinion of Kirkley, let me say that I had never been there, and that all I knew of the school was coloured by Channel 4 and RDF.
Once I got to watch Rock School, I started to enjoy it quite a lot. To me it played out like a suspense story, will they/won't they make it; will he, or will she be lead singer. And so forth.
I shall end here, before someone feels like copying this for their homework! (just kidding, ok).
