Oh you ask a hard question - top 3 changes every week! But at the moment the ones that come to mind
Third Watch (definitely in top 3 - always) OZ Murder One (but only because I'm watching it right now - will prob be reminded of something else and change my mind)
Also agree about Twin Peaks - classic, v.creepy!, would love to see reruns again.
Twin Peaks is awesome, i own all the Videos Cost me £80 (or something like that) off Ebay for the complete set, they're pretty hard to find now (2nd series that is, 1st is out on DVD). Personally i don't think that that series can ever be beaten. Imagination, suspense, wit, comedy, sureal, confussing, some of the best acting you will ever see. Simply superb.
As for 'The Kingdom' I strongly recommend for you all to get hold of it if you haven't seen it. It's Danish. Was remade recently by Stephen King 'The Kindgon Hospital' but thats not a patch on the original.
Six feet Under is defenitly the best of all the more recent stuff. Can't get into all this nip tuck etc etc. Although Desperate Housewives is pretty good, i really like the narration and it has some interesting characters, quite original.

I use to really enjoy the x-files when they were 'one offs' and you didn't have to watch every episode and follow what was going on. I think at one time i missed a bunch of episodes, went back to watch it and had no idea what was going on.
yeah it went nuts, but even when it was crap it was still good, always very slick thrillers even to the end and i think was amongst the pioneers of this current state of American TV dramas that are as good as (if not better than) the movies at the cinema.
Twin Peaks was...strange, but in a good way. It had me guessing a lot and trying to work out all the strange goings on, the guy that was at the edge of the bed (was it the mothers bed?) think that is one of the creepiest scenes on TV - seriously stuff of nightmares for me!
I agree about X-Files - it was unmissable when it was less about Mulder and Scully as such, then it became all about them which I might have originally thought was a good thing but I stopped watching after awhile, still don't think I saw the last series - and X-Files for me was once an unmissable show.
I think Nip/Tuck is good - but you have to stick with it - was not impressed with the first season but I've liked it recently- it got a lot better.
You must be thinking of BOB! There really are some seriously good and well thourght out characters in that show, David Lynch is a genious. But he certainly messes with your mind.
The West Wing is way out in front because it simply has everything - great plots, amazing acting, it is very funny, and the characters are so believable. 20 odd Emmy awards tells its own story.

Everything you say about West Wing's writing acting and direction is true. My problem with it, is that it shows a government of caring liberals, when the reality that's been playing out on our TV screens on the news shows a far more ruthless and dare i say dramatic reality. I would like it to have showed politicians as the snakes they are. It feels naive, if that makes sense. But I didn't stick with it though so maybe it got more biting. It's a good show though I just wanted it to be braver/darker in its depiction of the people in the halls of power. Like the great Brit TV drama (its not often I get to say that) House of Cards
The West Wing did show policticians as snakes - it was the people working for them that were the caring type, who just wanted to make a difference.

Sopranos is overrated IMO...best dramas of all time?? Hard one...Buffy and Angel are brilliantly written and acted are up there.
Also Carnivale The Wire Third Watch

Kidding about what? Buffy and Angel? Best written, acted and directed shows in the last 15 years. Not just shows about vampires and demons, and far from a teen show. Angel is actually rated 18's.
Carnivale is a class in itself, never has a show made be think so much.
The Wire beats the crap into any cop show ever made, that includes NYPD Blue and the Shield.

BOB? Yes I think thats right, not even sure if it was a man or a thing (he could just appear and then vanish, like a figment of their imagination - if 'it' was a human then ahhhhh!
