I watched about 20 minutes of the first episode before switching off bored out of my brain. This is yet another trite, utterly predictable US drama that is about as dramatic as a third-rate soap on cable TV. The large family house with sweeping driveway (typical); the irritating men, one of which probably harbours latent gay feelings to comply with Standard Drama Scene #456; the women still attractive, but so obviously past their prime and gagging for it more and more as the wrinkles fight expensive lotions and start to win; the patriarch, such a typical head-of-the-family figure who probably hewed raw timber with an ax (never an axe) in his pioneer days, so beloved of the American ideal; the get-a-job message reinforced from the get-go. This is all complete rubbish and a waste of my time, sorry. Who are these cardboard characters? What is this expensive lifestyle? Why is Flockista famous for being "on the radio"? Why couldn't she be a reformed alcoholic child molester, or something? Just SOMEthing, ANYthing to make the programme just a tad more interesting than the advert breaks.
I agree that the episode started off slow, along with many fans of the show. But you missed out by switching off. The best was yet to come, and I pity you for missing it. Episode 2 + 3 were brilliant too.

I watched a bit of the second episode, ooh, about ten minutes' worth! Like I said earlier, utter rubbish. So the father died? Do we care? With such a load of cardboard cutouts as characters, it's just another batch for the recycling bin - from which the whole show has been reconstructed, made up of self-same scenes from countless other, similar US "dramas". One could write a computer program to churn out this repetitive nonsense ad nauseam.

And yet you'll still watch if only to churn out your repetitive 'rubbish' comments ad nauseam. Your pissyness cracks me up.
Clearly it isn't for everyone. You busting a blood vessel, getting all preachy to convey your dislike is a little over the top. I mean exclamation points? However, it is your opinion regardless of how pissy. I just hope that you respect others on here who liked what they saw. You didn't like it for whatever reason ie, lack of relatability, etc., etc., etc., then fine.
I'm a believer in giving things a chance. I'll view enough of a series and determine if I will continue on or not based on what I've seen in terms of development. I don't jump the gun after one episode or two and then lose my cool (after all, it's just a tv show). There were those who didn't care for Ugly Betty at the beginning after what some considered a slow start. Yet, as the storylines developed, the quality of the series improved thus changing many opinions.
Btw, I'm not a viewer of this series since I am not a Calista Flockhart fan, but I had to chime in. You really cracked me up.
Chill, Little Tyke.

i watched it i thought it was good. i agree that not much reslly happened in the 1st episode bt im going to stick with it becuase it thought it seemed quite good, with some good characters and some great acting - although it was a bit heavy!! there wasnt any light relief like Desperate housewives of Six feet under had really. but it looks good - does anyboy know how it is doing in the USA?

EternalSunshine,Its been picked up for a second series in America.
I'm relly enjoying the show, yeah the first episode was a bit slow but the end was great & the 2nd was very good. I'll watch hte 3rd tomorrow night on E4.
The only reason i started to watch it is because i'm A Calista Flockhart fan & she is doing a great job in it. She has had a few bad reviews which i think is unfair as she is doing a very good job, i think she is a very talented actress.
Stick with this show, you guys. I'm in Canada and I've seen the whole first season already. The first episode IS slow, but it gets SO, SO good. The family entanglement and characters really bring you in. It's also really funny!

Its doing brilliant in the U.S, roughly the same as the hit show Heroes & Ugly Betty. It had 16 million viewers for its premiere, and 13 mil for its finale. It is a bit heavy in the dramatic scenes, but thats why I like it. If you prefer the lighter scenes though, dont worry. There are a few episodes which will make you laugh. The best is yet to come.
For those of you that missed the premiere, channel 4 is re-airing episodes 1 & 2 again tonight at 9:00pm - 11:00pm
Why should I? The show is regurgitated rubbish. That is my opinion. If you want to watch, I'm not stopping you. If you don't want to read my comments, that is your choice. Or are you against free speech if the message is too annoying?
