I am an A Level media studies student and am currently doing my "crtical research" module. I have been given the task to use different types of research to gain different information. My hypothesis is, "the similarities between British and American Television drama" I will also be countering this with an argument for the differences. I would appreciate anyones opinion on the similarities in genre, style and what you think makes a drama popular. Please do not mistake this for me asking for you to do my homework, I would just simply appreciate opinions from people who are interested in this field.
Thankyou Smile

only got to look at soaps-UK uses 'kitchen sink-model of loach/leigh/clarke while US goes for a glamourous, asperational model.

Hi media girl, interesting thread, when I compare US drama to ours, I think certain US drama is sometimes more grittier, maybe just because we know that guns are so commonplace out there, and even though we have excellent dramas here, there is an instant feeling of "someone will die" syndrome!! Also, like in hospital dramas, there is more blood and gore in the US ones, saying that, our stuff has got more realistic!!
Hope this is of some help, will come back later after giving more thought to your questions. Big Grin

Hey! Thanks for the replies! I agree with you Minkey in the comment on hospital drama, I compared ER with BBCs holby city and although it uses the same format they're so different!
I really appreciate you guys taking the time to give me your opinions, look forward to hearing from you soon! x

I agree with the hospital dramas too, and think that although Holby City might be a bit more realistic, ER is much more enjoyable; and after all TV dramas are meant to be fun to watch so don't have to be super-realistic all the time. As for other shows, i don't really watch many English dramas as i much prefer those in the US. I'm a fan of shows like One Tree Hill and The O.C, and don't feel England really offers shows of the same genre, at all and if they do i don't find them as entertaining.
