The British actress, who plays the estranged wife of plastic surgeon Dr Sean McNamara, has filmed scenes with Australian actress Portia De Rossi, who is involved in a real-life relationship with Ellen De Generes.
"Word is the pair's sex scenes are anything but tame," an insider told The Sun.
Last year, Richardson temporarily left Nip/Tuck in order to care for her ill daughter, but has since returned to the show.
